I've got the same issue like the planty of people but none of answers workd for me...
I've tried to add a line: options snd-hda-intel model=eeepc-p901
to the files:
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
/etc/modprobe.conf
And always with no positive result... I browsed planty of forums and none of the answers worked for me.
I've got asus eeepc 1000hd with Arch Linux 2010.05 [stable] fully updated & upgraded

I think post #6 at this thread is your solution: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1366524
Especially adding the correct "options" line based on the output of "aplay -l".
Philosophy is looking for a black cat in a dark room. Metaphysics is looking for a black cat in a dark room that isn't there. Religion is looking for a black cat in a dark room that isn't there and shouting "I found it!". Science is looking for a black cat in a dark room with a flashlight.

I know model=auto should be the default, but at least in kernel 2.6.33 it was not, and even if the issue is claimed to be solved in the latest upgrade, you can try:

That's my outpout of cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
[damian@myhost ~]$ cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
Codec: Realtek ALC269
So I should use one of them:
ALC269
======
basic Basic preset
quanta Quanta FL1
eeepc-p703 ASUS Eeepc P703 P900A
eeepc-p901 ASUS Eeepc P901 S101
fujitsu FSC Amilo
lifebook Fujitsu Lifebook S6420
auto auto-config reading BIOS (default)
but none of this options work's.
EDIT
I compiled the new kernel (2.6.34) and problem is fixed. It's propably only the kernel bug... previously I used 2.6.33 version.
