KDEMod3 Rebuild

I'm providing updated builds of Chakra's KDEmod3 packages, as it seems that they will not maintain them anymore (http://chakra-project.org/news/index.ph … oject.html).

You can start using KDEmod3 just adding these lines to your pacman.conf:

[kdemod3]
Server = http://pkg.markconstable.com/kdemod3/$arch
Server = http://vgafib.upc.es/kdemod3/$arch

It currently supports both i686 and x86_64 architectures!

The last version is based on Trinity 3.5.12 sources, which can be found here: http://mirror2.quickbuild.pearsoncomput … es/3.5.12/

If you want to contribute to the project, you will find the PKGBUILDs in Gitorious: http://gitorious.org/kdemod3

Re: KDEMod3 Rebuild

It would be very nice to inform the chakra guys on this smile (PKGBUILDs etc) so that you could have x86_64 packages as well.

Re: KDEMod3 Rebuild

There exists a KDE 3.5.11 called "Trinity", which has actually received updates:

http://trinity.pearsoncomputing.net/

It's only for Ubuntu however. I've tried it on an Ubuntu machine, and it's quite good. But I think the maintainer doesn't have that much time to upgrade it either.

Examples of new features it has: https://wiki.kubuntu.org/Kubuntu/Kde3/Lucid

Anyway, I'd love it if all those KDE 3.5 efforts, for Arch and Ubuntu would be joined together smile

Unfortunately I don't really have the time for doing that myself either sad

Doubtful.   They have basically dropped all support for kdemod-legacy and in the future dropping KDEmod for Arch altogether...

Re: KDEMod3 Rebuild

As stated on their news section:

We will split from Arch.

EDIT: I don't know why but the wind that blows in the Chakra team these days is quite exciting. Read their news.
I hope they'll make it.

Re: KDEMod3 Rebuild

Wow, if this had happened a few month's ago i would've jumped ship to kubuntu to keep kde3 big_smile
in fact i jumped from kubuntu to arch because kdemod3 was still around then

now i like kde4, it's usability is nearly what i had on kde3.

strange news about chakra though, I haven't kept up with their goings-on since i used vanilla kde4 in arch... good luck to them!

I wasn't aware of this project, but of course I will try to contact its developers, thank you!

I'm splitting from Chakra before they split from arch tongue

I will build x86_64 packages when I get a new host for them, we need x86_64 support but I can't use too much space on my current server.

The Trinity project is a waste of time for the community. They could be helping on KDE4 instread of doing such work on a deprecated DE.

Since people are making use of the Trinity project, it clearly isn't a waste of time for the community...

Now don't get me wrong, I would never go back to KDE3 now that I'm loving KDE4. But as far as I'm concerned, if someone does something that increases the options for a user, then the community benefits, regardless of how small the niche.

I agree!

While I find kde 4 better than kde 3, you cannot call the trinity project a waste of time. You can say that you think it is a waste of time in your opinion, but not as fact.

1.) People are using it and there are still people who prefer kde 3.5 over kde 4. So someone is filling their need. A need being met = not a waste of time.

2.) Open source developers such as I suspect for the trinity project, are likely doing this as a hobby to scratch their own itch. Since they are not being paid for it and are meeting a need, even if their own = not a waste of time.

I understand and can relate to the aggravation of seeing outdated projects forked and worked on instead o people gathering to work on the latest and greatest, but come on... a need is being met... even if you do not agree that such a need is viable.

I do want to say good work and good luck on your effort to meet this need for arch users (since trinity is a ubuntu project).

Re: KDEMod3 Rebuild

This project is really good news!
I've tried KDE4 on several occasions but I always end up going back to kdemod3. Somehow KDE4 still feels slow incomplete and bit unstable.
Looking forward to giving it a test drive.

Write permissions was OK. I fixed it by deleting /opt/kde/share/apps/krusader/useraction_examples.xml

Re: KDEMod3 Rebuild

Great work, but I want to explain a thing:

metak wrote:

Why? My packages are based on the KDEmod-legacy ones. These are well-tested packages for Arch, and will work better than a port from Debian.

The trinity project is NOT a Debian port for kde 3.5.10. It simply is an unofficial fork that intend to continue the develop of kde 3 (actually is at version 3.5.12).
The project leader chose to create ubuntu packages, but this means nothing.
The sources (CLICK HERE-----> http://websvn.kde.org/branches/trinity/ ) are _universal_ and all distributions can use them to create their own packages wink
