KDE 4 started lagging

The last few days I am experiencing terrible lag on KDE. When the system starts, everything is smooth, then gradually some KDE components start lagging. Navigating the KDE menu, for example, lags awfully. Another example is the window thumbnails in the taskbar. The lag is terrible. However, other 3D effects such as expose windows or cube rotation work fine. Also, glxgears has dropped a lot. I was getting some 9k fps, but now I only get around 6k. I know, not a benchmark, still I trust it as a proof for such problems.
My pc has an Athlon Phenom II X4, 4 GB RAM, Nvidia 9600GT, 74GB WD Raptor, 320 GB sata 2 Seagate, and a sata dvd writer.

xsession-errors, kdm.log, Xorg.log show nothing relevant. dmesg shows a message I was always getting but never caused me any troubles:

CIFS VFS: server 192.168.1.53 of type Samba 3.0.28a returned unexpected error on SMB posix open, disabling posix open support. Check if server update available.

I suppose I get this message because I have added some entries in the fstab so my pc automounts some samba shares from my Ubuntu 8.04 Server. However, I never had any problems with samba although almost all of my work is done directly on the shares.

The latest update of KDE didn't fix anything. Also, I am not having this problem on my laptop which also has arch and kde4.

Any help will be great.

Re: KDE 4 started lagging

Try moving your .kde4/ to .kde4.bak/ and let kde make a new config. If it works, fine. If it doesn't, just move it back.

I would like to avoid this because I am bored to death to configure kde from scratch. However, I will be forced to do this if I can't find the source of the problem. Strangely enough, I recreated xorg.conf with the nvidia utility (although I hadn't made any changes in the old one...), rebooted, and my new session was not lagging roll I doubt this normal behavior will be permanent, but I will check later and see.

I forgot to mention that there aren't any suspicious processes. Maximum X activity is 10-15%, plasma 8-10%, memory consumption is normal.

Thanks anyways.

Re: KDE 4 started lagging

I have encountered similar issue. After upgrade to 4.4.4, KDE started lagging, KWIN process goes up to 50% usage in compositing mode. Everytime I try to switch it fall back to suspend compositing.

EDIT:
No aforementioned steps helped unfortunately

Re: KDE 4 started lagging

After I monitored my system for a few days, I can say that the problem appears randomly from session to session, without a specific pattern and without error messages....

Re: KDE 4 started lagging

You really should ask at #kde on freenode

also your .xsession-errors at pastebin would be interesting wink
