I use ipv6 to get through the GFW (information >wikipedia)
PRC is an "amazing" country,en,most people here only know Windows xp and they sometimes think that rich man is good man ,so Bill is the Greatest man in the world, now he is becoming a bad man.
Only a few people here know about GNU/linux,in fact none of my classmates know about linux.if you tell them "我的计算机不用装杀毒软件"(my computer does not have to install an anti-virus software ,or "I don't need to have a mouse to control my computer"they think you are telling a lie. What should I do ?

welcome aboard! it's good to know linux has supporters inside the great firewall.
most people are set in their ways, and convincing them of something better (GNU/linux) when it goes against their beliefs (wealth = good) is difficult, but I think simply talking and showing them is a good start. just dont try to force them to accept or argue about it, since this turns most people off.
if you can find a balance, showing them what you can do, and maybe some gnu/linux sites (or other similar themed sites), without getting yourself in trouble, it would go a long way to opening their eyes.

Well not with PRC but in a neighboring country I tried to move some relatives to Debian. They deleted it as soon as I was gone.

They probably deleted it because they wanted Arch instead

Granted, this was a few years before I started using Arch and I'm sure my younger cousin would find it much more interesting. His sister on the other hand ...

You could tell them that they don't need a mouse to control Windows XP either...
Just enjoy your Linux setup and maybe show it to friends when they come to your home. Don't bother convincing people that it's better. It's not for everyone anyway.

that reminds me, i was at work (winxp machines) and i was using keyboard shortcuts for a lot of things, which i learned long ago, when i was first learning linux (before gnome/kde were around!). win9x and xp have their fair share of shortcuts, and it makes things go faster. Anyway, a coworker noticed and asked me wtf i was doing, and i showed him.
he was dumbfounded and asked why would anyone ever use anything other than the mouse for working with windows.
you will run into this with windows (and mac users even more) all of the time. and you wont be able to convince them otherwise, since some people just cant think outside their very narrow and confining boxes.

You do not need to make a fuss about your classmates. Enjoy yourself.
Awesome is awesome.

What should I do ?
If you absolutely want to convince your classmates that you are not lying, there is only one thing you can do. That is by constantly bringing up about Linux occasionally but _NEVER_ do it in a comparison or preachy way. Let them think their favorite OS is better, but show that you are really interested in Linux despite what they think. Over time, you might get a couple people interested enough to ask you about it and that's when you convince them. Once you show them, they will either want to try it or not. You by then would have already completed your main objective, so never force them to stay with it. More and more people will come to ask you eventually and they will look up to you for advice. I know this works, because I have seen this happen to me more than once from my experience. Yeah it's sneaky, but it's your only way of psychologically getting to them.

I will try,thank you.

Why not show them Ylmf OS if they are that fussy about Windows?

I second the psychological mind mind games. It has worked for me. My dad started using linux and has now forsaken all windows.

heh. I am currently in the ROC and the IT department here wanted me to bring in my laptop for a virus scan before hooking up to their network they looked rather dumbfounded. I suspected they could quite grasp how it wasn't a mac and didn't have windows.

How on Earth do you pronounce that?

The capitalization seems to imply that someone thought it was pronounceable.

Young man, relax. Just make sure you enroll in a university with a good Computer Science program, so that you have more nerdy friends to talk to. Why do you expect everyone to care about Linux?

What does the government in China think about Linux? I'm just curious. :-)
Just read about the GFW. I have a chinese friend who think it's good to block porns to people (He was living in China until the age of 13 so he knows how life is there. I'll talk to him next time about that. )

Not much. There's some fundings to support Linux-based developments, but most people still only know about Windows. What can you expect from those bureaucrats?

Well, you can talk to me and I'll tell you how evil GFW is. Google, twitter, wikipedia, facebook,..., all blocked in China. And porns are good too!

I have read about 'magic linux', a Chinese-developed distribution, on distrowatch from time to time, so there is some free software love in the PRC and it may suit your needs better. Then again, Arch is the best distro ever
