problem with DVD burning

I was trying to burn DVD with GUI it failed multiple times, so I tried with growisofs, but problem is the same:

:-[ WRITE@LBA=10h failed with SK=5h/INVALID ADDRESS FOR WRITE]: Invalid argument

if I try again it shows

:-[ WRITE@LBA=0h failed with SK=5h/WRITE PROTECTED]: Input/output error

so this process just destroys my DVDs

Do you know what may be wrong? I use same DVD type as before, same burner, same software (I was able to burn one, then it stopped to work). I tried even reboot and power off, nothing seems to work.

Re: problem with DVD burning

I got the same errors for a while. and yesterday I bought a new dvd-writer ... and guess what ... everything works fine now!

So this might be a hardware problem. I previously got a sony optiarc that did a good job until some months ago. once in a while it was still burning, so I was thinking it would be something else.

But this might just be the thing with hardware failure: it works less and less ...

I'll recommend Plextor for now. i got a very cheap px880sa now.

Yes, I read that it's considered that this may be caused by the incompatibility between media and optical device as well. One the other hand, in my case, the same device and media I used previously to burn DVDs and worked (less than one-year old hardware and media), now it fails every time and the device was not used since then.
Works for CD's, though.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Re: problem with DVD burning

Have you tried installing cdrtools (in AUR) instead of cdrkit?

It has helped me solve my 'burning issues'...

I did. It didn't work as well, I don't remember whether it was the same error or other, but I'll try again.

Re: problem with DVD burning

I though that after some updates - glibc, etc - maybe this problem vanishes. And yes, it did. I just burned one of those DVDs with xfburn (that uses the common back-ends) which used to fail and now it works neutral.

It would be interesting to hear from the people who had this problem but didn't change the burner yet whether it works now or not - with similar media as previously.

Re: problem with DVD burning

It is always possible that you upgraded while several packages were being uploaded, leading to version mismatches on your system...

If you have no error logs beyond the one you posted in your initial post, debugging this will be almost impossible.

Re: problem with DVD burning

My $0.02 is that growisofs is problematic for me too. At first I thought a kernel or udev issue made DVD burning impossible when growisofs and xfburn both failed on a DVD-R. However, upon checking the past DVDs I had burned, I saw that they were all DVD+R so I actually had no proof that my drive was even capable of burning a DVD-R. I inserted a DVD+R and was able to use xfburn. Growisofs still failed but not in a way that rendered the disc useless.

Great things come in tar.xz packages.
