Sound card suddenly stopped working

It was working a few hours ago, then I shutdown my box when I was done....
And now it doesn't work anymore.... sad

dmesg shows the following:

agpgart: Detected NVIDIA nForce2 chipset
agpgart-nvidia 0000:00:00.0: AGP aperture is 64M @ 0xd0000000
ACPI: I/O resource nForce2_smbus [0x5000-0x503f] conflicts with ACPI region SM08 [0x5005-0x5005]
ACPI: If an ACPI driver is available for this device, you should use it instead of the native driver
nForce2_smbus 0000:00:01.1: Error probing SMB1.
i2c i2c-0: nForce2 SMBus adapter at 0x5040
shpchp: Standard Hot Plug PCI Controller Driver version: 0.4

but I looked into kernel.log, this conflict has been happening for quite a while, never notice it before...

and lspci shows:

00:00.0 Host bridge: nVidia Corporation nForce2 IGP2 (rev a2)
00:00.1 RAM memory: nVidia Corporation nForce2 Memory Controller 1 (rev a2)
00:00.2 RAM memory: nVidia Corporation nForce2 Memory Controller 4 (rev a2)

03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX - nForce GPU] (rev a3)

when booting, alasctrl says sound card not found....

I didn't install/update any packages today....
I am totally lost on what to do next, and because my packages are a bit out-of-date, I am worried I would make it worst if I update packages...
Could someone please point me into the right direction please?

Re: Sound card suddenly stopped working

I could be missing it but I don't see a sound card in your logs.  Is it an onboard one?  If it's an add-on card, you may try pulling it and reseating it.  The contacts can get a little dirty and that sometimes helps.  If it's an onboard card, you could either buy a new motherboard or buy a cheap add-on (probably PCI) sound card.

I have a machine with the same chipset and it's about 7 years old now.  If yours is that old, you may just want to go for the new motherboard as this could just be the first sign of future problems.

Yes, it is a onboard sound card... in theory it should also show up in lspci, right? I couldn't remember whether it was showing up in lspci when it was working...

It is MSI Mega 180 mini-pc and it's probably as old as yours.
That's why I put linux on it and only use it to watch video on my LCD TV, save me from spending a chunk of money to build a media pc...

So you reckon the sound card module is dead?

Re: Sound card suddenly stopped working

My sound card does not show up in 'lspci'.

Try:

$ cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xfebfc000 irq 21

Edited:

Actually, it does show up in lspci  big_smile sorry.

Re: Sound card suddenly stopped working

Did you ever resolve this issue? I have the exact same sound card and issue as you.

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)

No controls are muted according to alsamixer

cat randomfile > /dev/dsp results in "Device Busy". Neither VLC nor Flash Player gives audio after a pacman update. Didn't even need to reboot, it just stopped working all of a sudden.
