oh and i forgot to mention that this happens only in arch, in both the default and custom kernel..no problem in slack with the same writer..

Have you tried another program than k3b?

I think that unlike some mswin progs, k3b reports honest values for speed, and this is as likely pegged to the quality of media than anything else.
Just a theory of course.
Anyway, what we all want is a good burn, regardless if it's slower ...
But what else is around apart from k3b? I used xcdroast in years gone by, but I don't see it around so much anymore. What are some good alternatives?

There are CLI dvd tools. I guess that k3b already uses them but maybe you could try to use them directly.

thanks for all the replies..i tried gnome baker, but that crapped out similarly when i tried full speed, didnt try a slower speed though...the point is i never had any problems in any other distro b4 arch, so maybe its arch specific..some obscure setting in the kernel perhaps?

Is this your first time with a 2.6 kernel? I have never gotten the same speed since 2.4.24.
Offline
no its not...using 2.6.11 now, but ive using 2.6 (since 2.6.0) in other distro's without similar problems..

ok good news(in a way) this problem is not only linux related, cause Nero reported that it was writing at 4x, but it lied..the speed is the same..thanks for the help!
