Strange screen problem when changing resolutions.

i have been using Debian on Dell Inspiron 8200 with a Radeon 9000 for a few years and decided to go with a change. I have Arch  dual booted on desktop and it runs fine so i thought i would try it out on my laptop that i use 90% of the time. Im having a few issues. Main one is I cannot change the resolution . It is set at max at 1600x1200 and I dont like it that small. I prefer 1280x1024. prolbem is when i go to change resolution either in Xfce ,Gnome.Kde It sets there for awhile then when it finally does change resolution the screen is messed up. Not like a wrong refresh rate problem. But almost like some sort of effect. The outter edges are bright white like clouds and center of screen is bright with like a foggy haze over screen. I can slightly make out the screen underneath. If I let it set there it starts to fade and the desktop appears clearer but Its locked up and only way to get out of it is to shut computer down. Ive never seen that before and do not know if it is because its a laptop with LCD screen. Ive never had this issue with this laptop on any of the other dozen or so  Linux versions.

EDIT:
It also does it if i add   modes  "1280x1024"  to xorg.conf. I have tried remvoing Xorg.conf and it doesnt make a difference. It does it no matter if there is no xorg.conf  or if i use Xorg -configure to generate a new one. This xorg file.

Re: Strange screen problem when changing resolutions.

Just a update..I just did a -Syu  about 10 minutes ago and now i can change screen resolution fine now. Something must hae been updated since yesterday last night. Because I had already done -Syu last night and it did'nt help. Also the other thing that was happening is gone to. If I clicked anthing with mouse. If I didnt move the mouse away from what i clicked it wouldnt do anything. I had to click it then move it.
