As the subject states, I'm wondering whether I can get a display of the number of unread messages in each folder in the folder list view.
Short question
EDIT: After re-reading my post, I thought I'd give some more information.
I'm using Gmail, and the "folders" are Gmail tags, assigned to various messages through filters set up at Gmail. This is mainly to sort traffic from the many mailing lists I subscribe, each into its own folder.

This is possible. You want to use the "incoming folders" collection, and add anything that gets new mail to it. I also suggest to use the combined folder display as it's easier to use. These features are the ones I recommend:
combined-folder-display
quell-empty-directories
enable-incoming-folders
enable-incoming-folders-checking
expanded-view-of-folders
The help text for these in the setup screen is useful to read. If you get it setup right you'll then be able to get to the next folder with unread messages by using the Tab key inside a folder.

I gotta write this down somewhere, so I never forget. A load of thanks!
