Wtf? Are we only going to have ondemand, nothing else? O.o
I've created a draft of the KDE 4.5 arch wiki page. I added a section with a workaround for Cpufreq:
Nice for the wiki page.
This is just a bad reason to remove this from powerdevil, but we can workaround it.

For the record, this is currently needed to install full kde 4.4.85
pacman -S kde --ignore kdeplasma-addons-applets-socialnews --ignore kdegames-kpat --ignore kdebase-kinfocenter --ignore kdeplasma-addons-applets-opendesktop --ignore kdeplasma-addons-applets-opendesktop-activities
Otherwise, it might pull in 4.4.80 and 4.4.4. I removed old kde before that. There are many problems with simple upgrading.

[...] You should have check to which packages those files belonged.
I did as a matter of fact. My db is broken in what way / why is forcing wrong in this case?
Current output:
pacman -Qo /usr/bin/kinfocenter
/usr/bin/kinfocenter is owned by kdebase-workspace 4.4.85-1
[...] but you should not get those messages because kinfocenter [...]
Again, I did get the messages when using pacman. After enabling the repo and updating I think I did '-S kde-meta', that probably caused it..

If you are responsible for the packaging, then you need to know the first one are pulled in because of some kind of naming issue, I guess.
"kdegames-kpat" no longer exists, I guess it is renamed to "kdegames-kpatience".
These are two old ones still in the database.

My apologies, I didn't read your message before, I stopped at 'error: failed retrieving file'. socialnews and kpat removed from kde-unstable x86_64 database

any news about the bindings packages for i686?
Offline
Right, I got beta 2 installed and have had a little play. Yes, it's pretty stable and very usable. I thought I'd share a few thoughts.
Well, I haven't had any crashes yet, which is always good :-) But I notice that there are yet more completely opaque options concerning "desktop activities", which seem to find even more imaginative ways to break your desktop. I've managed to end up with no activities at all on more than one occasion, with no obvious way of bringing one back. I don't use this feature though (since I'm not really sure what it's for anyway), and I'll give the devs the benefit of the doubt that whatever this interface is supposed to do will play nicely by the final release.
I was using colibri (from the AUR) for notifications in 4.4, since I don't really like having my auto-hidden panel being unhidden every time there was a notification to display. But, it doesn't seem to work with whatever changes they've made to the notification system. Has anyone else got this working?
Oh, and thirdly the system settings window has been completely rearranged - it's taking me ages to find anything! (still haven't found screen edge actions)
But apart from these minor things, it just seems a more stable and slightly more responsive version of 4.4. Well done to all involved!

@petelewis:
to 1) desktop activities are part of KDE since 4.2 and I'm using it since then. They changed the handling in 4.5 a little bit and maybe something broke. If you know that already, then I misunderstood you.
to 3) systemsettings has a searchbar. Type in "screen edges" (or something else) and you will be navigated to the right section.

obviously I'm the only one but I have big slowdown if I have the effects enabled. I do not know why just me. Beta 1 worked fine.

I found kwin does not like emacs. An idling emacs makes kwin with composition eats 15% cpu. But if I just shade or minimize emacs, kwin's cpu usage goes back to 2%.

Just installed the beta, my old config went away (that's probably my fault though ), but otherwise it seems fine. A lot of crashes in rekonq, rest is totally fine. Seems a bit slower than 4.4. A strange problem is that it does not remember my desktop widgets upon re-login, I add analog clock and folder view, but they are gone next login. Ah well, it's a beta.

Anyone else getting their desktop freezed after changing fonts or window decorations? I only get this problem with kwin compositing enabled.

Oh, I should mention that I have an Intel GMA965 and I'm using the testing repository.
same issue for me with an intel x3100 (same card but for laptop ?)
my other issue (slowdown) is because of the direct rendering. i must uncheck and Check again.
At every boot i must uncheck and Check again direct rendering. the activation is not saved.

Yeah, I have the X3100 too. I wrote the chipset name because is used more than the other one.
I guess we'll have to wait until the next release to see if compositing gets better

edit: as for now, the only bad thing I noticed is a significant increase in cpu usage (about 3% for kwin, X and every other open app) with the new blur effect enabled.

Works fine generally for me. 3 problems, 2 that should matter at all. Kwin has been taking up a lot of cpu, to the extent I have to turn compositing off to watch flash videos. I think this might be because of the new blur/translucency algorithm used (which is very nice by the way). Using nvidia propriety driver and xorg 1.8.
Desktop activity settings do not seem to be saved at all, this is rather annoying, but I've started to get used to the default activity anyway.
Also kdepim is just not working (tm) but that's probably due to the fact I'm running kdepimlibs from svn and kdepim from extra
Consistency is not a virtue.
