one more thing: i've mentioned before that i'm testing ubuntu now. previously, i thought this difference might be because of KMS. well, that's ruled out: i've disabled KMS on ubuntu too, and i still see the memory improvement.

arch boots in 12s without upstart to kde, kde takes 88MB, system is snappy under more heavy load than mere firefox (no swapping under standard usage after two weeks).
As I said, your config(s) must be fixed.

okay. so to test a theory, i did a full reinstall of arch. this might not be necessary because of the rolling releases, but i gave it a shot anyway. boom. with the same stuff installed (took almost a day for me to set it up), it uses less memory than anything i tried before. it appears that this has nothing to do with the init style or kms. probably it was because of config files, but maybe because i've been updating this system for half a year now.
so i admit: you were right and i was wrong.
i'm a happy arch user again. yay. ) marking the thread as solved.
