ALSA + Shared Mic Input

Is there a way to get multiple apps to share the microphone input in ALSA?

PS: OSS does not work properly on my system

Try pulseaudio.

Any other solutions?  Pulseaudio lags too much for my tastes.

Re: ALSA + Shared Mic Input

Pulseaudio shouldn't lag (please define what you mean by lag, by the way) on any normal reasonably modern system. You may/may not be able to use standard alsa. I wouldn't be hopeful, since I don't think there's an equivalent to dmix for recording.

You could also try JACK. Pulseaudio is better for non-pro-audio usage though.

Re: ALSA + Shared Mic Input

If a background process is consistently using 10 to 15% CPU usage on a 2.6 gigahertz processor and is reducing gaming performance when sound is in use, then I would define that as lag.  And JACK does not work with either of the programs I want to use my mic with.

Re: ALSA + Shared Mic Input

10-15% CPU is a bug, it should be much less than 2% (it is on my machine which isn't as beefy).

Unfortunately you don't really have much of a choice. Suggest you try and solve whatever is messing with your PA setup.

Re: ALSA + Shared Mic Input

A bug?  Considering the poor code quality in pulseaudio, that doesn't come as much of a surprise.  I'll just be getting a $5 mic someplace, then.

Re: ALSA + Shared Mic Input

Lennart is actually very strict on the code he allows in to Pulseaudio, but its a complex system (hence bugs). But feel free to diss other's work if it makes you feel better.
