I have bonobo-activation-server running in processes... What is it?

What is "bonobo-activation-server" exactly?

Try starting with Google, follow the links and read on ... For example,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonobo_%28 … t_model%29

Or try "man bonobo-activation-server"

yeah i had seen that page. Thanks loafer!

But i am wondering why exactly is it running? I have nothing open except for my desktop. It mentioned that it monitors .server files. Could it be that X server uses .server files?

That man page might be a little confusing. It's basically a part of GNOME that runs all the time. Specifically it starts up Bonobo stuff used by your applications.

Now what is Bonobo you ask? According to the wiki article loafer links to, it "is a component model for creating reusable software components and compound documents." And there is an example of its use, "Bonobo can, for instance, be used to embed an HTML component to show some text or an SVG component to display statistics taken from a database." From a more technical point of view, Bonobo is a monkey.

haha a monkey. But yeah, from that description, it sounds like an application that would use it would be something like Open Office (HTML,  SVGs, insde a document, etc).

SO it will run even if there is no program relying on it at the moment it seems!
