FFMPEG without a doubt,

here's a simple how-to:

Re: [SOLVED] Screen Casts, which app is the best?

One more vote to ffmpeg, its perfect for this and for anything in audio/video.

I really recommend that you install pulse, its give you a lot of control (for example its make really easy to grab the sound from the microphone AND the sound from your other apps in the screencast)

EDIT:  But I change one thing is this tutorial, dont use faac, use neroaac the quality of faac is much lower. or prefer vorbis its better.

I use glc if it's a OpenGL app, otherwise FFMPEG.

xvidcap (http://www.archlinux.org/packages/?sort … &q=xvidcap), easy to use.

Re: [SOLVED] Screen Casts, which app is the best?

Thanks guys, i'm gunna try xvidcap since it provides a GUI for ffmpeg.

Hey kazuo, by pulse are you referring to the pulseaudio package? If so, how does it work exactly?

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pulseaudio

You can record the output of any app and your mic at the same time. Please try searching and reading before asking questions, I've noticed quite a few of your posts which are answered in the wiki/bbs.

Re: [SOLVED] Screen Casts, which app is the best?

Alright, i've recorded a screencast with xvidcap... but where the heck did it save it to? lol I didn't see any option to "save as" or where it saves file by default.

Any idea?

Not sure where it saves by default. I know recordmydesktop (what I was going to recommend BTW) saves it default in home folder, so check there (you probably already did though). ANyways, my recommendations are Recordmydeskotp (there's GTK and QT frontends that are both good, and nearly identical to each other), and GLC for OpenGL apps. GLC is great, very similar to Fraps on Windows.

Recorditnow (qt app): http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/Re … ent=114610
It's also possible to use kdenenlive (qt app).

kdelive just acts as a gui for crap software, like recordmydesktop or istanbul. either record at low frame rates and quality regarless of settings, even if you max out the quality to  2000000 you still get less than prime casts. They are easy to use though, if that's the only criteria

So? I had no problems with the framerate when I made HD 1080i 30fps 2 pass last time I used it.

I just tried Ffmpeg, and yes it's good, but I don't think recordmydesktop is terrible. This was made with it (ignore the glitchiness at the beginning, that's only present on Youtube, it was fine till I uploaded it). Good enough quality for me, and good framerate. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YU4YhCuKmg I've had generally good results from it (EXCEPT on my integrated ATI card, it didn't even work at all on that tongue)

Re: [SOLVED] Screen Casts, which app is the best?

My vids come out a little choppy with xvidcap. i guess my computer isn't all the best yet. xvidcap is saving video files to the home folder. too bad there's no way to change it!

Re: [SOLVED] Screen Casts, which app is the best?

Alright, I've tried recordmydesktop! It seems to work much much better than xvidcap for me. The video is smoother and the quality looks better. I set both for 30 fps and the quality at defaults. recordmydesktop was much better! I'm guessing it is because recordmydesktop by default doesn't write the video until the recording is done. It makes a cache of the video then writes the file after recording is finished. This could have limitations, but you of course have the option to turn on simultaneous writing of the file if you wish.

I recomend recordmydesktop! It has tons of options (just no GUI). gtk-recordMyDesktop is a GUI for it! big_smile

If you install gtk-recordmydesktop pacman will automatically install recordmydesktop as a dependency. wink

Re: [SOLVED] Screen Casts, which app is the best?

Awesomeness! Check out the screenshots of gtk-recordmydesktop:

gtk-recordMyDesktop-thumb.png

Waaay better than xvidcap it seems but that might just be based on my system capabilities. wink

I just tried out the latest update of the cli version (0.3.8.1-4) and it's certainly come along from last time I tried it
