Java web start

Isn't Java web start supposed to just work?

I've never had any luck with it. I've tried clicking links in firefox, downloading the jnlp files and running javaws on them, or running javaws on an URL directly. In all three cases, nothing happens. javaws stays open, it doesn't exit immediately, but its not displaying anything or any output either.

Does it work for other people? anybody else have a trick to get it working?

Using updated arch -- firefox and java 5, etc. Here's one URL I'm playing with:

its for a speech recognition demo... (thinknig of voice commands in Ensmer, what say?).

interesting... 'javaws' without any arguments is supposed to show some kind of webstart manager, but for me its not doing anything either.

Interesting you brought up this subject. I just got done deleting a bunch of bugtraq updates about a vulnerability in java web start...
don't recall much about it, since I am no longer use java for much, and have never really liked webstart...

Is java web start installed with arch?
I never had much luck with it, other than a brief stint on a windows box a while back. It worked then, barely, and with questionable consistency...

Also, reading some info on java lately. Is it legal to redistribute a precompiled java? I know the FreeBSD folks cannot legally do so. Novell apparently has permission from Sun (a license?), Mandrake only does with their "commercial version", and redhat does not (they distribute the IBM JVM with their corp versions).

Is this something that might have the potential to bite the Arch devs in the arse legally? Just curious...I am always on the lookout for my "homies".

the javaws command is installed with java 1.5, it just doesn't work.

Sarah31 (contributor) and Xentac (maintainer) have both read the Java license and felt it said it was redistribuble. However, I think we should keep quiet about it, maybe delete both these posts when you've read them.

Are you using the arch jre? I am using one installed in my home dir, maybe is a permissions thing?

Yeah, I'm using the Arch install... the real problem here is I'm not getting *any* feedback. I can't find any logs, no errors or warnings or output... its just running and not working. Apparently I'm the only one its not working for.

I've never had any trouble with other aspects of the java install...

Nah, I'm not having any luck either. I tried getting WS working a month back as it's quite useful when trying to work through the Swing Tutorial. I have it working fine on my workstation at work (which runs Fedora2 with jdk1.4.2 installed) Like you, there's no feedback with the javaws program installed on AL. I gave up a while back though.

I tried today to resolve this problem of the dormant WebStart. The one distributed with JDK1.5 wasn't doing much so I downloaded the webstart tool (http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/download.jsp), unzipped and installed the tool locally in my user space, et voila, it worked first time.

The handy thing too is that it seemed append to .mime.types and so you will see the newly installed javaws as an option when you click on a jnlp file via firefox

Nice. The thing is, I've not been able to try JDK1.5 on another distro to establish whether its a general problem with the JDK, or whether it was to do with how the AL package was built, i.e., is this an AL bug or a JavaWS bug?

Anyone else had any luck with other distros?

It works in PCLinuxOS, where java is included right after the OS installation.
On Arch, if you extract java 1.5.0 update 2 JRE/SDK, whatever you need, over the Arch binaries, then javaws works fine, but some other things like the Mozilla/Firefox plugin still have some issues.
By the way Sun has issued update 2 many days ago, why there aren't Arch packages yet? (licencing worries maybe?).

But everything else *seems* to work (although, I've not run every binary supplied), so this may be overkill unless you simply want the update - otherwise, just download WS separately.

The current Java package has been flagged as out of date, so the packager will be on the case.

Here's a workaround I just found:

add this to your CLASSPATH:

/opt/java/jre/lib/javaws.jar:/opt/java/jre/lib/deploy.jar

run the following:

java com.sun.javaws.Main http://path/to/jnlp/file

I've managed to clean up, hack, and fix the PKGBUILD for j2re to be a lot cleaner. I'm giving them to Jason to include in the next release of Java. Most importantly to this topic, java web start seems to work with my version, including the two links that didn't work with the workaround listed above. Webstart should no longer be an issue with the next j2re release.

Uh... actually, it seems to be working for me after a clean install of my packages.

I posted the packages as an attachment to the bug report, would you like to test them?

javaws works fine with the new packages.
Firefox now does not freeze when trying to run signed java applets (in my case it's the web UI of Azureus in https mode), but crashes/vanishes instead. That's also an improvement, saving you from typing "alt+F2" "xkill" and clicking your mouse once after that...
Konqueror's behaviour with the same applet has not changed at all (failing to run the applet), and what's more annoying- this applet runs fine on the windows version of Firefox.

Update 3 has fixed the browser plugin issue, and javaws works fine as well. Not sure yet if everything is OK, but so far it works fine on Arch (extracted the Sun .bin files over the Arch installation files).
