[Solved] Wine+Steam games=no-go

Hi, everyone

I don't know if I'm the only one with this problem: when launching games from Steam, the game just crashes.

Here is the relevant part when launched via terminal, just a moment before launching ANY game (in this case L4D). The first "Unhandled page fault" is from the moment i launch it, and the "Unhandled exception: page fault" is from the moment I close the error wine pops up.

Some background:
My laptop is running Arch x86_64, with bin32_wine from the games repo, and right now the radeon driver from perry3d's and gtklocker's repo powering my Mobility Radeon HD 4570 (yes, lib32 for 3d is also installed, google earth works fine). I have also tried everything with the catalyst driver and the error is just the same. Also tried bin32-wine from AUR.
From within my 32-bit chroot (I have one to build things and play around a bit) Steam does not connect to the Steam network, so I can't really test if it is a x86_64-only issue without installing a complete 32-bit Arch.

For 32 bit chroot action, copy your resolv.conf and if that still doesn't work, mount -o bind /proc and /dev to the respective paths in the chroot. Apart from that, L4D works good good. Perhaps try the -dxlevel 80 -novid -console option?

Re: [Solved] Wine+Steam games=no-go

Steam needs the corefonts or it'll crash. Install bin32-winetricks from AUR and execute:
winetricks corefonts

Well, I DO have internet access from within the chroot (and /proc and /dev are bind-mounted), it's just Steam that doesn't get connected to it's network). And it's also happening with other games, like CS or HL, all of which should work fairly well...

I already had all fonts copied over from my Windows 7 install, but just in case I started over with a new wine prefix and winetricks, but was again unsuccessful.

There must be something wrong related to where Steam loads games in memory, maybe a conflict with something, I think. I should write a bug report to wine, maybe they know what's going on.

Thanks anyways!!:)

Man, I LOVE YOU. I was launching the games from my windows installation, and I disabled exec by using the "users" mount option in fstab. Now it works!! (Well, at least as well as it should, in wine!)

Thanks!! big_smile
