xorg will use proprietary drivers only when being told so.
Therefore you need a xorg.conf
Easiest is to just do aticonfig --inital which will create it fully automatically. The Warning you get is not related to fglrx.
It just says that your
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
should be called
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
looks like it's working now...I will try some 3D accelerate game and see....thank you all so much.
By the way I think the wiki about catalyst is not rly clear...:/

Yeeah! Thanks to Azieth's kindness - who gave server space - catalyst repo got now more appropriate place to live!
Thank you very very much mate!
[catalyst] [catalyst-xorg18] [catalyst-test-xorg18] [catalyst-10.3] and [catalyst-10.4] repositories got now different addresses so please change your pacman.conf. All is discribed in ATI Catalyst Wiki
I have also added packages needed to use video acceleration (libva-sds,mplayer-vaapi,xvba-video) into [catalyst] and [catalyst-xorg18] repositories. And again i haven't tested their i686 versions, but they should work fine .

I want to try these hard! I hope that these solve a lot of my problems with 2d performance ...
The AMD servers are quite crushed right now

You can't get what you need from the links in the OP of this thread?

I used to be surprised that I was still surprised by my own stupidity, finding it strangely refreshing.
Well, now I don't find it refreshing.
I'm over it!

10.6 is on AMD's servers
Thanks! AUR's has been updated, repos will be updated soon.
And wow, this 2D acceleration is really workin! LOL
After installing i removed /etc/ati/amdpcsdb, and Xorg.0.log is telling that its working:
(==) fglrx(0): ATI 2D Acceleration Architecture enabled
So its not called Direct2D . Its fast, maybe catalyst doesnt need backclear/backfill patches? I will test that in minutes and write about it...
Edit: YES! It's working fine on unpatched xserver 1.7.6 @ kde! Althought i cannot see list of effects @ systemsettings - STRANGE. Gotta look closer @ this
Edit2: 10.6 also fixes my problems with kwin and memory leaks.
Request: can some gnome/xfce/*box/other_de user confirm that its (unpatched xserver) working fine for him? Im seriously considering pulling out patched xservers from the repo (ofcourse xserver 1.8 still has to be patched - but maybe only for version "hack")

I use compiz-standalone WM after 10.6 installation memory usage is down from around 900 mb ram to 400 mb(with my usual windows open), and indeed window resizing in normal mode is smooth and instant no more cpu load
Well done ATI/AMD

This release looks promising. X's ram consumption has dramatically gone down. Let's see how it goes along the day.
@Vi0L0 no problems for me in systemsetting's desktop effects, but I'm using the patched xorg-server 1.7.6-3

Using the patched 1.8 from AUR, I have corruption with catalyst 10.6. See the screenshot here:
http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/5404 … 6x768s.png
I'm using xfwm4 w/ compositing enabled. The backfill patch, which used to work, might be the cause of the problem, so I'll report after more testing.
Edit: Removing the patch doesn't work either. Still, I can verify Vi0L0's finding that backclear/backfill patches are no longer needed. If enough people can verify this, I'll remove my AUR package when xorg 1.8 hits [extra].

I cannot enable desktop effects in KDE using kwin. Moreover, window resizing, drag and scrolling has become painfully slow. I tried both the patched xorg-servers from [catalyst] and also the vanilla one from [extra], same results. Mobility HD3470 with dual head setup here.
I roll back to 10.5 for now.

Same problem with xorg-server (1.7.6 not patched)
Edit : with KDEmod 4.4

Glad I'm not the only one. Can anyone else confirm this? Especially people using different DEs/WMs.

Same problem with xorg-server (1.7.6 not patched)
Edit : with KDEmod 4.4
To solve that problem remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf and build another with # aticonfig --initial.
That solve problem for me.

so Installed package nas and solved
Thanks for the info, and sorry for that, its fixed with new build - no need of nas anymore
<sigh> so theres a lots of problems with 10.6 i see... also users of phoronix forums are telling about bugs you all mentioned and more:
http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24296
As about backclear/backfill packages i guess i will leave them in the repo, maybe it will work for somebody, i will just change the name of backfill-patched xorg-server to something else, and leave xorg-server package unpatched... Will leave note when done.

Since its for WebM, its fine hopefully one day browser based 1080p videos will run smoothly.
Just tried playing with -vo vaapi:gl all i see are artifacts, so got the latest from splitted-desktop, compiled and same deal!!
EDIT: I give up.. Switched back to 10.5. Latest mplayer-vaapi works fine.

LOL! Ok, another update - this time ive builded packages on clean arch x86_64 system (virtual), so it shouldnt have any additional library dependencies

Yes, webm looks promising, and looks pretty good as for early-look

Looks like im a lucker - 10.6 works well on my machine, without errors or bugs mentioned here or @ phoronix <sigh> (well except opengl errors that arrived with 10.5 - bad texturing with q3a engine games)

As you may see i have updated [catalyst] and [catalyst-xorg18] repositories.
xorg-server package is now free of backclear/backfill patches.
Although theres new package called xorg-server-backclear patched with backclear patch, and ofcourse untouched xorg-server-1.X-catalyst-maximize-fix patched with fedora's backfill patch - just in case.
There are also [catalyst-10.5] and [catalyst-xorg18-10.5] repositories - addresses of them are the same as for [catalyst] and [catalyst-xorg18] repositories.
Now I am updating Wiki with that information.

I can confirm the Q3-games-issue but have also another problem:
Black 'boxes' in Firefox, Gnome without Compiz. Could the backclear patch fix it?

Catalyst 10.6 gives me a segmentation fault (Kernel 2.6.33, 32bit, Radeon HD 4650), so no graphical whatever.
Sorry for not providing the log-file, but I wanted my desktop back. :-) Maybe I provide one later. (I'm back on Catalyst 10.5).
