Install problems on G3 Lombard 333 Mhz -

I'm new to Linux, bee using it for about 2 years - mostly Ubuntu / Debian. I have an old Mac Lombard I'm tying to resurrect as a decent word processor, so I thought Arch would be speedier than Debian for this purpose.

I'm trying to do a net-install on the Lombard by attaching to my G4 by ethernet cable - so they're sharing one connection.
It detects the network, and dhcp gives me an IP - and eth0 is up - so it should install quite nicely.
The problem is that when I get to "install base system" in the installer, I get an error that reads like this:

"One or more packages failed to download. You can try again
by re-selecting Install PAckages from the main menu"

I'm not sure how to switch terminals on the mac - otherwise I'd give the output. Any suggestions / thoughts on how to make it work?

Before you even go through trying to figure out why your network connection isn't working you should probably know that Arch is optimized for i686 and doesn't support the PPC processors.

However there has been some development in porting it to the PPC platform.

Well said, I've looked over both -

But it works, apart from not wanting to download the packages to install.

Should I just can it and go Gentoo instead? I find Debian 5.0 pretty slow -
