Hi all,
I'm tired of booting windows just to use skype to talk to my girlfriend. Help me fix my internal microphone on my XPS m1730.
I'm using alsa, and all of the volumes are up, but after arecord -d 5 my.wav and aplay my.wav, I hear nothing. How can i set up my sound card to capture from the internal mic?
Thanks.

When you're in alsamixer what do you see when you press F5 key? Also, any of the vertical bars show "MM" at the bottom? ;-)

Maybe this will help:
http://en.community.dell.com/support-fo … 03187.aspx
(i.e. Setting "model=dell-bios" in /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf)

Tried that, doesn't seem to help.

When you press F6 (or F6 S) do you see multiple sound cards? (Could you be configuring the MB sound card instead of PCI?)
Otherwise, looks like you have:
* Front Mic Jack (Mic In)
* Mic Jack (Line In)
* Input Source (Digital Mic)
* Input Source 1 (Mic)
* Input Source 2 (Mic)
Navigate to each of these (Left-Arrow, Right-Arrow), reconfigure (Up-Arrow, Down-Arrow) and test. May need to experiment a bit to find the right combination of Mic / Digital Mic / Analog Mic / Line In.

To answer your first question: I see: "- (default)", "0 HDA Intel", " enter device name..." and the first, "- (default)" appears to be selected.
I've been playing around with the various mics, but I guess I can keep doing it...
