Re: xbmc-git AUR package: discussion in here please

What do you think: Should I enable internal ffmpeg again?
Thanks for the hint tidalf!

Re: xbmc-git AUR package: discussion in here please

I have no problems with the last build (that is using the extern ffmpeg lib). Are there any reasons to use the internal ffmpeg? As is understand right, even the devs recommend to use the external lib.

Do they?
I also have no issues with the external one.
But I have no HD stuff here nor other uncommon codecs. Just xvid/divx and the bigbuckbunny test video.
IMO we should stick with external ffmpeg.

PS: D'oh bigbuckbunny is HD and has an "uncommon" codec (mov). It runs fine here.

Re: xbmc-git AUR package: discussion in here please

Man it's so annoying not having 100% DVD playback. Prior update I couldn't even boot a dvd img/iso, after the latest svn, at leats now the menus works, but xbmc refuses to play the dvd.

Oh well I'll just have to wait then smile

It's h.264 smile. The container is not the most popular, though.

As for the internal/external debate: if external is what works for most people, then stick with that. People who want to use the internal one can still decide to change the PKGBUILD, it's pretty easy. People running SVN should know what they're doing anyway tongue.

greenfish wrote:

Not sure where you got that from, Xbmc has its own ffmpeg-based internal player.

Apparently the problem with the internal ffmpeg could have been introduced by this patch: http://trac.xbmc.org/changeset/31039/ If someone with a lot of time could build one before and after, that might clear it out (I don't have the time to try atm). I can testify however that 31065 didn't play anything, it had the error I linked to earlier (unresolved symbols).

This might fix it too, apparently:

sed -i 's|CODEC_ID_AAC_LATM| CODEC_ID_AAC|' xbmc/cores/dvdplayer/Codecs/ffmpeg/libavformat/mpegts.c

Not if it's currently broken. Using external ffmpeg seems to be working fine for me at the moment, at least.

XBMC used mplayer during the Xbox times, and the Linux port is pretty new compared to that - I'd have been confused myself if I hadn't read half their wiki. On Xbox the dvdplayer was just a DVD player, but in the ports it's evolved into the main playback engine.

I'm also trying to get an external player to work, since DVD playback is pretty much broken in the latest svn.

Yeah, externalplayer worked fine after I'd done the system upgrade. Check the XBMC wiki page detailing playercorefactory.xml, it explains the syntax.

If you for instance used the configuration I posted, I assume you'd add another section like this under it:

<rules action="prepend">
  <rule dvd="true" player="mplayer"/>
</rules>

You write all this into ~/.xbmc/userdata/playercorefactory.xml and DVDs should by default play in mplayer. Note that I haven't actually tried using rules myself, so do check the wiki if it doesn't work. Oh, and I believe it goes without saying you should properly set up your mplayer config.

Playback works perfectly for me on the current version of xbmc-svn in AUR, but it doesn't hurt to have mplayer as fallback in case it'll be needed some day.

My pleasure...
(it seems to be on trac here : http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/9405)

About  internal vs external thing I don't know which one is best maybe using the internal ones will lead to less versioning glitchs...  but if external works well (don't tried yet) perhaps the  benefits of shared libraries worth the trouble^^

Cool smile

As for this in the PKGBUILD:

# fix lsb_release dependency: IS THIS NEEDED???
    sed -i -e 's:/usr/bin/lsb_release -d:cat /etc/arch-release:' xbmc/utils/SystemInfo.cpp || return 1

It's not 'necessary', but I think you want it. When you bug Xbmc guys about a problem with your SVN build, they'll know it's an Arch system you're running on. It changes the release string just like the Arch kernel has the -ARCH suffix, nothing more.

Yeah their wiki can sometimes be quite confusing. The fact that it's still called XBOX media center is pretty funny, but oh well.

Cheers for your tips, but everytime I try to lauch mplayer (play using - context) X crashes, with something like, "mplayer can't connect to socket". I'm running xbmc standalone and archlinux as the kernel.

I've tried running mplayer with no config file, and with a default one, same results.

Using xbmc-svn 31203-1, still the same issues, some of my dvds works, but the one's i'm having issues with, still freezes when I try to access a chapter/play/audio etc.

Thank You

IIRC they've renamed the project to XBMC media center, so it's now a recursive acronym.

Regarding the error you get, I have no idea as I didn't get anything like that myself. With the old xbmc-svn package they had bundled with it an xsessions .desktop file which launched xbmc-standalone, and I had mplayer working perfectly with that. Now I just have an awesome session start and then autolaunch XBMC, convenient if I should ever feel like doing something non-remotely.

Have you tried running mplayer under another window manager? I thought the "couldn't connect to socket" stuff was lirc error messages.

Re: xbmc-git AUR package: discussion in here please

ffmpeg is definitely screwed up.
Internal  ffmpeg works thanks to tidalf's "patch".
@.:B:. : Your workaround does not work here.
However, both external and internal ffmpeg "hangs" and the background flickers for 20-30 secs before it starts playing a video.
New PKGBUILD uploaded with internal ffmpeg and tidalf's diff.

@tidalf: It would be nice if you provide a patch next time - not only a diff output.

Noted too, I'll do that (it was quick & dirty fix, makefiles generation & lib linking in such a project are quite mysterious for me)... by the way I'm not sure but it seems to be fixed with last revs, don't know how.

Yeah the lirc error is spamming my logs, but it shouldn't be the main issue, at least not in my case.

Running mplayer under a DE or WM gives me the same error message.

I've created a ticket under the xbmc trac, hopefully a dev or two will help me out.

Thanks for your help so far eirik smile

Re: xbmc-git AUR package: discussion in here please

@.:B:.
Thank you, but... big_smile
take a look at the current xbmc-svn upload in the AUR.
My problem was that i had to guess where to put the $(EXTRALIBS) stuff.
However, internal ffmpeg does NOT work without this patch. I built 31280 and it still does not work (for me, at least).

BTW: Thank you all for your support!

Vlad

PS: I still have this flickering problem before playing a video with internal and external ffmpeg.

Re: xbmc-git AUR package: discussion in here please

The flickering is supposed to be normal; it's Xbmc adjusting your refresh rate through xrandr to match the frame rate of the video you're going to play.

And your patch is better than mine, mine just hacks the Makefile, Makefile.in is better tongue.

That's odd. This wasn't there some releases ago and it is annoying.  I don't believe that it is really intended.

I've always seen flickering since I first started using Xbmc (which is only recently). If you have the adjust refresh rate to frame rate setting enabled it's normal before you start playback.

Do you guys know have any neat scripts to recursively generate "extrathumbs" for movies? (For use in Aeon's movie view, I don't know if other skins support the feature.)

Re: xbmc-git AUR package: discussion in here please

I think the discussion is better had here than on the AUR page of the xbmc-svn page.

For those that claim libvpx is necessary to build Xbmc with the internal ffmpeg (for the sake of clarity: internal refers to Xbmc's own branch of ffmpeg, when Xbmc talks about external ffmpeg that means whatever your distribution packages), I suggest you try the following:

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dev … ean_Chroot

Ideally one should use this to build all packages, but this can get a little tedious. If you build xbmc on a 'filthy' system where libvpx is present (and that is very probable given the Arch ffmpeg depends on it), Xbmc will pick libvpx up no matter what. The same happens to libass. Xbmc will build with external libvpx (and external libass, for which it does have an internal counterpart). There are two things that can prevent this from happening:
A) you use a clean environment, for which the chroot is arguably the easiest solution
or
B) you filter the Xbmc makefiles to see how you can disable libvpx (and, if you wish, libass) even when present on the build system.

I know libvpx or libass only need a few hundreds of kB each, but that's not my point. It's about the statement that some of those libraries would be required to build Xbmc - which they are not.

@.:B:.
maybe, but there was obviously someone who couldn't play movies without libvpx installed during building.
Hehe, setting a chroot is an option, but I do not have the time to do this right now...
