LInux performance issue on HP Pobook 4510s

Hi All,

I have a Hp Probook 4510s with 2.1 Ghz Core2Duo and 4 GB ram,
I have Widows XP on 1 partition and have installed linux 5 on other. Iam facing performance issues with linux it is running very slow

When i run top on terminal it shows Load average 3 or 4 and when iam trying to copy somthing it consumes all of the memory and load average goes to 17.

Iam a newbie dont know much about linux and HP only provides support for the OS which was shipped with the product that is VISTA.

can anyone help me in this regard?

Re: LInux performance issue on HP Pobook 4510s

I assume with your mentioning Windows XP you're saying that the problem doesn't occur there?
When exactly is Linux becoming slow? Only when copying something?
A CPU load of ~20 % is perfectly normal for a copy process (as is (some) memory usage).
You'll have to supply us with more information.
Do the CPUs get utilized 100%? What's your usual resource consumption in Idle (both memory and cpu). Where are you copying from (network, usb, internal) and how much are you copying? Are you using a swap partition? If so, how big is it and (to what extent) does it get utilized?

You can find out those things with the system monitor (personal preferance) "htop".
Common reasons would be 100% cpu utilization and/or excessive swap usage on a slow hard drive.

No. after startup(Idle) the the Load average is 2 to 3 and when iam copying smthing the load average goes to 17 and 18

And yes i have swap partition that equals to 8 GB cuz my ram is 4 GB

If that's the only problem, I don't see anything really wrong with it. My "cp" process can take about 17% of CPU. What filesystem are you on? How do you check for the memory consumption?
