Notify-osd only works in root mode

I use awesome with gnome for stuff like keyboard shortcuts. I love how notify-osd but it only works if i open the program in root mode. I have tried to remove naughty in the awesome config but that didn't work. How do I fix this? I really like notify-osd and I had it installed before but it never gave me trouble before.

Make sure no other awesome module is pulling in naughty. Check if /usr/lib/notify-osd/notify-osd is running as user after running notify-send.
