Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Just replaced 10.5 with 10.6. Using openbox with xcompmgr for shadows. Didn't notice any glitches yet. Xorg.0.log says ATI 2D Acceleration Architecture enabled. Didn't notice any performance increase yet though as it was already fine with 10.5.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I have got some request to those having problems with 10.6 - it was written @ phoronix forum, here http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthre … 300&page=2 - soo... could you try to:

Hans wrote:

You have to purge uninstall the old fglrx driver.
Then you have to completely remove /etc/ati
Now reinstall fglrx 10.6 and run aticonfig --initial --force and all is good.

or:

bridgman wrote:

The driver install instructions tell you to :
- fully uninstall the previous fglrx driver
- restore the original xorg.conf file that was present before the previous fglrx driver was installed
- run aticonfig --initial
If you restore the original xorg.conf as indicated in the install instructions then you normally won't need the -f option.
If the xorg.conf has been modified, either by hand or by an earlier version of aticonfig then the -f option often helps.

As i can see it helps some people.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I still can't output 1680x1050 using HDMI to my LCD monitor using catalyst 10.6.  This didn't work in 10.5, but did work in 10.4 (catalyst-test).   In fact, xrandr only lists 4:3 resolutions for my HDMI output even though my LCD is widescreen.

Other than that, it seems fine with openbox and xcompmgr here for me.

@ V!0L0
It doesn't help for me.

I have unload fglrx, uninstall, delete xorg.conf and /etc/ati, and install catalyst 10.6 : same problem. It appears only on Firefox (With chromium no problem for the moment)

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Uninstalling and reinstalling doesnot help. Same story with 1080p videos vaapi doesnot work properly. The rest is perfect on 10.6 though. So for now will rest on 10.5 until next month for 10.7. I've never noticed a 2d lag or an increase in performance using fglrx. See em only on vesa. Firefox has always been snappy even with about 70-100 tabs (no flash) ( Exception if pages have over 10 widescreen pictures not chrome though in that aspect). With 10.4 upwards kwin has become seemingly fast.

I think I am starting to see stuff horizontal tears, artifacts(not really there apparently) on my screen "Paranoid Delusion" with upgrading and downgrading drivers every month.:D:D LOL...had to ask my gf to confirm that there arent any tears or artifacts. This is driving me crazy.:D:D

Unfortunately 10.5 sucks as much as 10.6 for me, so I'll be reverting back to 10.4 hmm

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I also had the black firefox problem.
I have tried with xorg 1.7 but it is the same as with xorg 1.8. Kernel 2.6.33 and 2.6.34 also makes no difference.

Sometimes after enabling and disabling compositing (I use the xfce4 compositer) the problem goes completely away. But only sometimes.

vaapi does still work for me. There are in fact vsync tearing issues when vsync is not enabled. However with vsync enabled they completely go away.

Vaapi works for me as of catalyst 10.4, but no matter what I do there is always tearing. What are your settings so you don't have any tearing? Which media player? Fullscreen or not?

It doesn't completely go away, always comes back after a while...

I just enabled vsync in amdcccle.
I use smplayer with custom vo vaapi:gl, additional option for mplayer -va vaapi and Screenshot/direct render/etc. disabled.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I use the exact same settings, but when I play full screen videos there is still some tearing.

Well, maybe one day catalyst will finally support tear-free Xv output (probably a decade after nVidia supported it) and we won't need all these tweaks and stuff. Wishful thinking, I know hmm

For me the tearing disappears after I do the GUI tweak -- That ATI Catalyst Control Center. These are my settings.

Under 3d Push the slider to far left(Quality).
Check Enable Catalyst AI and push knob to Advanced.

I only xperience tearing in -vo xv. But I use -vo gl or gl2 for smaller videos. For Br-Rips and Blue-Rays use -vo vaapi:gl -va vaapi as you guys did. I never use Smplayer for HD videos. only the commandline one. I wrote a script with mplayer & set an icon for it since smplayer tends to use a bit more cpu.

Are you using compositing? Cuz... well this is strange, but i had to change UnredirectFullscreen=off line (which work until now) to UnredirectFullscreen=on in [Compositing] section @ ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc file.
So maybe problem is here? For compiz this option can be set @ ccsm ->  General Options -> Redirected Direct Rendering

Edit: Ops, sorry, i just noticed that:

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@Vi0L0: I do have compositing on, but not through Kwin or compiz, I'm using xfwm's own compositor.

Does anyone know an xfwm equivalent of UnredirectFullscreen?

Still it shouldnt tear at all when your compositing is disabled...
Umm... does enabling v-sync really works for you when you are running ie some game?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Yeah, vsync works. For example without Vsync I can play HedgeWars with around 150fps (but with severe tearing). If I enable it tearing is gone, but the game fps becomes fixed at 60fps, as expected.

I've also tested another game, extreme tux racer. Without Vsync, fps is significantly higher but there is also some tearing. Fortunately, the game has a "stencil buffer" setting and when I enable that I can get rid of the tearing issue, without enabling Vsync.

@dcc24: now this is really strange... it should work.
Hmm... what about adding TexturedVideoSync=Son to [AMDPCSROOT/SYSTEM/DDX] section of /etc/ati/amdpcsdb ?

Well, it is already there. hmm

Let me get this straight, you have tearing only when compositing is enabled, right?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Interesting...

For me, the situation is a bit weirder when compositing is on, i.e when in fullscreen mode I have tearing, but when NOT in fullscreen, there's no tearing at all.

Same card here, same behavior. It's rather annoying.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Those who have the "black problem" please list your DE/WM and compositor, maybe we can use that to narrow the problem down.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Ok, me first then again:
XFCE with HD 4670.
It happens with and without the xfce compositor. It happens with xorg 1.7, xorg 1.8, kernel 2.6.33 and kernel 2.6.34. It happens with a newly created xorg.conf (with aticonfig --initial --force) and with reinstalling after deleting /etc/ati/.
Sometimes after enabling/disabling compositing it is better for some minutes but then comes back.
Xorg.0.log:

Complete dmesg:

I don't understand

[fglrx] module loaded - fglrx 8.74.4 [May 27 2010] with 1 minors

But the file is actually owned by catalyst 10.6 so maybe it's a wrong date.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Let me write mine in detail:

Xfce 4.6 with the xfwm compositor. Using xorg-server-1.8-catalyst-maximize-fix from AUR. Kernel 2.6.33. Recreating xorg.conf and/or deleting /etc/ati and reinstalling doesn't help. The card is HD4330.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Uh oh, I hope this isn't establishing a pattern that blames the problems on XFCE...

I am using XFCE 4.6, no compositing whatsoever (I like it semi-minimal). I am using xorg-server 1.7.6-3, and the xorg.conf tricks that dcc24 mentioned above me do not help. I have an HD4770, and I am able to play Left 4 Dead 2 on Steam with WINE with a noticeable increse in framerate since upgrading Catalyst (~35fps avg -> ~50fps avg), so I'm willing to put up with firefox issues for now.

Linux myhost 2.6.33-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu May 13 11:32:37 CEST 2010 x86_64 AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 940 Processor AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

I do remember that the random blank areas in firefox-branded 3.6.3 were black immediately after I upgraded to Catalyst 10.6 from 10.5 yesterday, but now they seem to be grey instead. For instance, everything that should be firefox's menus and toolbars are currently gray, but minimizing and refocusing the window fixes it. I'm not sure what I may have changed since then, unfortunately.
