HP 1315 AIO error scanning after last update

scanning was working perfectly until I did an update yesterday. From what I can see, everything looks fine, until I get the error message when actually trying to scan

$ lsusb                                                                                         
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 03f0:3f11 Hewlett-Packard PSC-1315/PSC-1317 

$ sane-find-scanner                                                             
found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0 [hp], product=0x3f11 [psc 1310 series ]) at libusb:002:002   

$ scanimage -L                                                                         
device `hpaio:/usb/psc_1310_series?serial=MY4362D055O2' is a Hewlett-Packard psc_1310_series all-in-one   

then I get the following error, whether I use a graphical frontend or run from command line.

$ scanimage >image.pnm                                                                         
scanimage: open of device hpaio:/usb/psc_1310_series?serial=MY4362D055O2 failed: Error during device I/O 

I made sure to enable hpaio in /etc/sane.d/dll.conf.
My user is in the scanner group

What am I missing here?
