Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Same annoying problem with firefox. Tested with wmii window manager (no compositing, no DE), custom 2.6.32 and 2.6.34 kernels, Radeon HD4670 and xorg-server-1.8.1 with the version hack. catalyst-10.5 was fine.

The only relation so far seems to be HD4xxx cards and mozilla (xulrunner) apps. Anyone with another card seeing black drawing artifacts in firefox or some other software?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Well, if I recall correctly, Vi0L0 also has this on KDE, so this seems DE/WM and compositing independent. Let's just hope this regression gets fixed in 10.7 hmm

I'm using firefox-pgo, so it's xulrunner independent too...

Same here as well, but I doubt it is related.

No no smile. I didnt write about any problems. It's fine for me. No matter what kernel or xserver im using. Using firefox from extra repo here. HD4850.
Edit: i had problems with kwin effects list @ systemsettings, but it was some internal kde error which i fixed.

Edit2: I have just switched to gnome (without compositing) and bam! Now i can see what artifacts mean!
With kde its fine, even when compositing is off.

Not for me. I got 10.6 to work (without segmentation fault), but some of my plasmoids are completely black and I have problems with firefox and thunderbird (also black something) and systemsettings (KDE) was unusable. Also, I couldn't enable compositing in KDE (it just don't want to activate).

So back to 10.5. 10.6 is too buggy for me.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi! I'm using Debian, but I've faced the same "black box" problem. There is no solution for the problem (at least non I've found), but there is a quick fix:
aticonfig --set-pcs-str=DDX,ForceXAA,TRUE
This way the 2D accel is set back to the old (slow) 10.5 way. I think that there won't be any real solution till 10.7.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Can anyone confirm this works? I'm away from Arch for now.

Edit: Bridgman from AMD, mentioned this on Phoronix forums and it seems to work. The problem is caused by the new 2D accel arch and reverting back to XAA fixes the issue.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@balihb: thanks for the tip! ive updated our wiki
@dcc24: hah! so we still need backclear/backfill xservers wink
<thinkin, lookin at the sky full of stars and aliens> wondering will it be fixed in 10.7...

AFAIK (i can be wrong here) firefox/thunderbird use own engines to render themselves, gnome is used just as 'skin', maybe thats why catalyst isnt fallowing them...

It's not a firefox/thunderbird problem, but it's most visible on them.
xulrunner does use gtk: http://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra/i686/xulrunner/
but more low level than other apps (AFAIK).

Yep, seems like backclear/backfill patches will always be required when using XAA as the accel method.  If/when this new 2D AA becomes stable and AMD drops support for XAA, we can drop the patches then.

I can confirm that

aticonfig --set-pcs-str=DDX,ForceXAA,TRUE

corrects the problem.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Guys, I tryed the new catalyst 10.6, and I have a problem. 3D is not working, and glxinfo is saying something like:

[gruntz@tangra ~]$ glxgears
X Error of failed request:  BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request:  130 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request:  19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request:  15
Current serial number in output stream:  15
[gruntz@tangra ~]$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
X Error of failed request:  BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request:  130 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request:  19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request:  15
Current serial number in output stream:  15
[gruntz@tangra ~]$

What can I do? I can`t see anything about that problem in the forum. I have brand new updated system, from standart repo.
Regards.

Excuse my poor English.

Thanks! Also kernel 2.6.34 is in extra, [catalyst] repo has been updated, [catalyst-xorg18*] repos are no longer needed. I will update wiki with those infos soon...

Edit: Ok, wiki updated. If you are experiencing problems with xserver 1.8 please write it down, maybe we could help. Also please notice that there is [xorg17] repository with xserver 1.7 packages.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hey, I've been using the [catalyst] repo with success for the last couple days, but had an issue today when trying to pacman -Syu.

I think you need to bump the pkrel of the catalyst package, pacman is not recognizing that it is a new package, so it tries to upgrade xorg server to 1.8, but fails because the current catalyst I have installed (10.6-1) has versioned dependencies specifying xorg < 1.8.  However the new catalyst package which changes these dependencies also has version 10.6-1, so it is not recognized as needing to be updated.

Is the catalyst package still the same just with changed depends?  If so I can just install xorg 1.8 with the -d option.

edit: BTW, you should also set your PACKAGER variable in /etc/makepkg.conf so that pacman -Qi and -Si don't show the packager as "Unknown Packager" and we know who to thank smile

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@jowilkin: bump! thanks for the info smile. Ive just renamed catalyst-xorg18 repo to catalyst and forgot about pacman... Sorry for that. Looks like i need to recompile packages again with new pkgrelease number. Unfortunatelly i need to go sleep right now wink so there wont be any update for some hours...

Quick solution: try to just
pacman -S catalyst
i guess that pacman will then notice older catalyst 10.6-1 as corrupted, ask you to delete it and then again type pacman -S catalyst so pacman can download newer one.
If not: pacman -Rd catalyst and pacman -S catalyst will do job (i believe).

jowilkin wrote:

yes
Edit: NO! I had to be to sleepy to think correctly <sigh>. New package contains module for kernel 2.6.34, while old was compiled for 2.6.33...

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Thanks, I actually did what you suggested already and it worked fine for me. pacman -S catalyst, and then pacman -Syu to pull in the new xorg-server.
