upgraded tonight and after reboot screen rez went way down. I think it had to do with the linux firmware upgrade. I tried reinstalling nvidia 195.36.31, deleting /etc/X11/xorg.conf and doing a nvidia-xconfig, but it didn't work.
Ironically, kwin's desktop effects still work.
right now I can only et high rez with the open source drivers.
can someone help a noob out?

Seems like it is trouble with the nvidia-drivers and xorg1.8.

But that's for the 173xx and -96xx drivers, not the 195.

not until you post Xorg.0.log
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

I upgraded again just now and that fixed the problem, it seems my mirror hadn't synced fully.
Thanks Everyone.
