I'm sorry if I went away... to answer to your old question:
BigLouis87 wrote:If you like to view H264 HD1080p videos, I use SMplayer with video option "gl (veloce - schede ATI)", in Italian it means (speedy - ATI cards). It should be a special video driver to use ati acceleration, with that I am able to play 1080p films very well without frame drops.
It's a lot better than "xv (0 - Radeon Textured Video)" for me.I hope this will help you
Are you sure you use the open source driver and not the catalyst driver? For me xv is faster than gl. And from the technical side xv should be better.
I'm very very sure.... my X1600 is not supported by catalyst since one year and half!! I use your repo
I confirm that "gl" doesn't work, but "gl - ATI cards" is working fine!
If this can help you, my smplayer.ini contains:
driver\vo="gl:yuv=2:force-pbo:ati-hack"
Another question...
my favourite power profile is "low" and I would like to set it when the radeon driver loads, instead of "default" that loads the high profile I think.
What's the best and clever way to do that?
Thanks

Xorg 1.8 has moved to extra. At the moment i recompile the driver/libs.
Now we can remove radeon_ucode. Linux-firmware owns the new firmware files :-)
@BigLouis: Just put the command in /etc/rc.local.
Today i tested a 720p with my old laptop (x300 card):
With mplayer -vo xv: 50% load
With mplayer -vo gl: 65% load

Okay, I had some xorg-1.8 ready drivers but it's ok

With xorg 1.8 i get this bug: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28327
But there is a patch

Head of drm-radeon-testing branch already has that fix. I'm building right now, let's see if it works.
Right now, with the packages from your repo I'm having some serious graphics glitches

Oh, there were some commits in the last few hours. I will recompile the kernel.
Tell me if the glitches disappear.

Ok, i upload the recompiled kernel. But i forget to increase the pkgrel number. So you have to reinstall the kernel.

You have to remove radeon_ucode. It conflicts with linux-firmware and isn't needed anymore.
Maybe pacman give you some more informations.

Use linux-firmware-git instead of kernel26-firmware-git.

Dear fellow archers,
I have one pretty ennoying issue with my ATI card (RV730, HD4650 Mobility).
I am using 64bits system, up to date from yesterday (not using testing).
The issue appeared the 1sf of April: this day the packages ati-dri and libgl have been upgraded from 7.7 to 7.7.1.
Before, everything was working fine, after the upgrade impossible to start X (black screen), in UMS or KMS mode. I downgraded to 7.7 and waited.
Today, I upgrade my system to the new xorg 1.8 (and thus ati-dri and libgl to 7.8): same issue ! Which means that the regression has not been solved in between.
The 2 last lines of the kernel.log shows:
"You are using old and broken userspace. Please upgrade mesa or ati-dri"
"Resetting GPU"
Xorg.0.log shows nothing (only contains the data from the previous successfull start).
Some ideas about this regression ? Does somebody with RV730 has the same issue ?
In any case, it is 100% clear that it is ue to some modifications in ati-dri and libgl from 7.7 to 7.7.1. With 7.7 everything is fine (even 3D), upgrading these two specific packages to 7.7.1 creates the issue.
I am not using any xorg.conf

Is your system freezing? I mean can you switch to a tty by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1. Or did you try to login over ssh?
You only get a Xorg.0.log if you use the old mesa parts (ati-dri and libgl)? That is weird. What is the output if you start X from a terminal (startx).
You can try the git packages. Maybe the issue is already fixed. There is a repository mentioned in the first post.
Simply remove the old stuff (pacman -Rd glproto dri2proto libdrm mesa libgl ati-dri xf86-video-ati) and install the new packages (pacman -S glproto-git dri2proto-git libdrm-git mesa-full xf86-video-ati-git). And if you want to there is also a new kernel: pacman -S kernel26-drm-radeon-testing (you can install it parallel to your arch kernel. Don't forget to add it to your boot manager).

I've already done it.

BTW, with the updated kernel everything is fine again, no weird glitches. Vsync is enabled by default now...

Very fast and snappy, even with the low profile. :-D

Uff, I was wondering what I've done for these gliches - tried to recompile drivers, to install from testing etc. Nothing worked, now I know what's going on and updating

Seriously, I really wanna ask one question and it is.. why, in the course of playing Nexuiz, everything starts off smoothly and all, but slowly begins to cripple and frame rate drops to like 10 fps in the time span of 5 mins? This is ridiculous! Anybody experience the same shit?

ops...

You're welcome
Off-topic: among other things, pacman can help you with these situations by querying it for the package that owns the file, e.g.:
pacman -Qo some_file
returns the package that provides some_file, if it exists.
Have a look at pacman's manpage, it has many interesting options.

Yes, system is freezing. Impossible to switch the tty.
I will try to make some tests today on a test partition and bring some cleaner log than what I previously posted.
