It takes 15 seconds of wait between packages

Hello to the forum.

I am trying Archlinux and I find that Pacman takes about 15 seconds without any activity between the packages. I mean, when a packages finishes downloading, the next one won't start until a few seconds later.

This has happened to me always that I have used Archlinux, since March or so. It takes about 30 minutes to download the packages of kdebase-workspace.

Any idea?

You probably have selected a server with big ping times. You can use rankmirrors to make a better selection.

I did rankmirrors after installing (the three or four times I have installed) and it keeped the same.

I am from Spain and I uncommented two mirrors from Portugal, Great Britain, Germany, United States, Italy and France. Then, I did the rankmirrors (installing Python before).

Try switching from FTP to HTTP mirrors, or the other way, depending on what your current preference is.

Well, I haven't tried that. I will do it in my next installation, but my doubt is... how can I do it later? I normally comment the mirror used in installation. Are the other mirrors in '/etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist' http, ftp, or what?

Note: I was using the http mirror from Finland. Yesterday I reinstalled and used the French one, with the same results (also http). So I'll try with ftp from France and will tell you, but I would like to now if I can find both http and ftp in mirrorlist.

In /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist you can see if the server is http:// or ftp://
Just use one of the nearest servers in your /etc/pacman.conf

Oh, what a surprise! Same problem here!

It's very odd, but this problem only happens at home. When I am in another place (my parent's house, for example), pacman downloads pkgs without that pause. I think it's due to my router, but I don't know what to do. Any ideas?

Could it be a DNS problem? Would disabling ipv6 or running nscd (sudo /etc/rc.d/nscd start) help?

I already have ipv6 disabled. It made my connection go very slow, but in Arch this didn't happen, but it didn't solve the problem neither.

I'm having the same issue. Except for me it's about 11 seconds.

Once it starts downloading though it's pretty fast . Uses all of my 8mbps connection

Exactly the same for me, the download speed is normal (12 Mbps in my case), and I have counted 15 seconds. ¿Can anybody with this problm try Powerpills and tell if it gave a good performance?

Why don't you try it yourself and see if it works for you? It's in the official repos, and I can assure you it works for what it's designed to do. If Xyne (the author of powerpill) thinks it might help, I believe him.

Well, once i finished downloading gnome, rebooted and started up in gnome downloading was blazing fast with no delay between packages. Maybe it was the reboot that fixed it on my end?

I just want to add that if your local mirror is fast enough to use your full connection speed then powerpill won't be able to get more out of it. It does use parallel downloads though so instead of having to wait x seconds after each download to start the next, it will start many at the same time, so it should still reduce the overall time of the operation.

Downloaded latest install .iso (2010-05) and installed arch, xorg, and kde. (x86_64)

Was successful in starting x and with..exec startkde, kde desktop appeared. This occured one time only.

After reboot, the same start procedures were necessary but ....exec startkde failed to start. The error statement indicates ....libssl.so.0.9.8 in /usr/lib is missing.

How kde was started initially is a mystery given that the lib package is missing!

Subsequently, re-downloaded kde and installed over the existing install.

Same problem...no kde.

Reason for including this in this thread is that , while I have the latest pacman installed and ran SYY, the downloads for kde were 13 seconds between packages, altho the download speed was correct during the download.
This activity started yesterday and is on-going. Googling says its an ssl problem but many of the threads are old (before latest pacman4.2.0).

Two problems probably directly related but not certain.

EDIT: Startup problem solved with ..pacman Syu... which installed a number of packages including upgrades for avahi. kernel26 (34 -2) and mkinitcpio..

Kde4 desktop reached in 20 secs from boot prompt.

Here I am. I've been out for more than 1 month.

I have just finished installing Arch Linux. I haven't installed anything yet, only the base system, no Xorg, no KDE, no Gnome, no drivers...

Before doing it, I would like to know if I can now install powerpills, and how, to make the other processes much faster.
