Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

i'm also using Vi0L0's catalyst package with xorg-server 1.8 from extra - works good - no difference to xorg-server 1.7 so far :-)

Edit: i sometimes have small artifacts (for example at the firefox address field), but very rarely (they also appeared with xorg-server 1.7). But no reason for me to disable the new 2D architecture.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I just updated my systems (both i686 and x86_64): kernel 2.6.34, catalyst 10.6, unpatched xorg-server from [extra]. Everything works  well using kwin and compositing, no slow window maximizing so I think there's no need for parched xservers. The only strange thing is that I see some artifacts when minimizing and maximizing Firefox and Thunderbird (but not Sunbird, strangely), which however vanish when I drag the window giving me back the usual look.
Thanks Vi0l0 and everyone who contribute to make catalyst work!

Unbelievable! 10.6 has 1.8 support???? Amazing!

@snack and everyone else: If you have artifacts with firefox etc. you HAVE to switch back to XAA rendering to fix it. There is no alternative for now. Yet when you go back to XAA, you need to have a patched xorg-server, either backclear or backfill.

The aticonfig command didn't work for me. Is there a xorg.conf solution for this?

The aticonfig command has no effect when X is running. Try adding it to /etc/rc.local , it works for me smile

Catalyst for Linux makes progress ...
Supports Xorg-Server 1.8 and 2.6.35 with a patch, that's really nice.
I hope the Q3-Bug is fixed in 10.7, if yes it will be the best version we have ever seen. smile

X never run, when I used the command. hmm I'll try this rc.local thing.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Since updating my system to xorg-server 1.8 and catalyst-10.6 today, I can no longer get 1600x1200 resolution in X. xrandr says 1280x1024 is the max. I tried downgrading to 1.7/10.5 like I had before, but it is still the same.

The following can be found at the end of my Xorg.0.log:

(II) fglrx(0): Modeline "1600x1200"x0.0 202.50 1600 1664 1856 2160 1200 1201 1204 1250 +hsync +vsync (93.8 kHz)
(II) fglrx(0): Modeline "1600x1200"x76.0 208.74 1600 1720 1896 2192 1200 1201 1204 1253 -hsync +vsync (95.2 kHz)

Obviously, my monitor doesn't support ~95kHz. Can I change these modelines somehow?

EDIT: Nevermind, fixed it with a bit of xrandr --newmode in my X startup scripts. Still seems weird that it won't detect my monitor's resolutions anymore. Kernel issue?

I know, I only wanted to point out that the artifacts are not so annoying at least for me. I prefer to finally get rid of patched packages and stay as close as possible to the official repos.

Last time when i was checking 2.6.35-rc3 - catalyst was working fine with my 2.6.34-rc4.patch :-)
And afaik theres no new 35-rc4.

Really I cannot contribute to it, but following your steps written at ATI Wiki, now installing Catalyst is a very easy job.

Again, thanks a lot.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

With the positive feedback here I risked the switch to xorg-server-1.8 and .34 kernel.

Xorg segfaults though, with xorg-server from extra and both patched versions. (well, the patches are not related, but I thought it was worth a try)
(RV770, HD4850)

I'm not in the mood for downgrading, so I'll probably wait for 10.7 and ignore the fan noise with the open drivers. The artifacts seen with 10.6 on 1.7/.33 crippled my firefox anyway.

ah yes, indeed ! big_smile

I was using 2.6.35-rc3-zen* (WIP) so it probably didn't work because they're using unstable DRM

confirmed ! it works fine with vanilla 2.6.35-rc3 tongue

thanks !

Wine 1.2 RC4 packages:
- i686 version
- x86_64 version
Used PKGBUILDs are here: http://catalyst.apocalypsus.net/tarball/

Thats strange cuz im also using this gfx, successfully.
Do you have nforce4 chipset? Segfaults with it are well known bug with catalyst > 9.8.
Also did you add nomodeset to your kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst and fglrx to MODULES array in /etc/rc.conf ?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

No, ICH10. nomodeset set and fglrx in modules, it worked before.

Maybe its an error on my side though, since the error was during Xorg -configure. (thinking about it, I dont even know if that is supposed to work with fglrx)
I'll give it another try once I find the time to do so.

I never used Xorg -configure. Try just aticonfig --initial and then tune your xorg.conf with backuped up Xorg -configure lines.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Thanks!
I also had segfaults..
I removes xorg.conf and executed aticonfig --initial
now X starts smile, strange that an incompatible xorg.conf gives segfaults :S

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Ok it seems that ATi started to make finally something good with catalyst for linux. 10.6 is working great (x86_64, kernel 2.6.34) except artifacts in firefox, 2D is better, maximizing and resizing is smoother then before, but still prefer using backclear patch.

Big thanks to Vi0L0 who maintain Arch's catalyst packages and work hard for our convenience!
I noticed increasement of catalyst's repo traffic every day, which means that it is useful for lots of people.
Thanks again Vi0L0, thanks from the whole community for your work on Arch's packages!

Yep, Xorg -configure segfaults with fglrx. I just merged the 'aticonfig --initial' output with my last xorg.conf and everything works as expected.

Thanks for the packages and repo server you two.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Quick question guys: Is there a way to connect an external LCD and have a dual head setup, without having to restart X? If I try to make the changes through amdcccle it changes xorg.conf and asks me to restart, which I don't want to do. I'm looking for the kind of functionality that nVidia binary driver offers.

Oh, and I've already tried xrandr, it fails with a crtc error.

You have to specify a virtual framebuffer size in your xorg.conf. See the option "Virtual" in the following:

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "HD3470"
    Monitor "PANEL"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
        Viewport 0 0
        Depth 24
        Virtual 2560 1024
    EndSubSection
EndSection

You have to set Virtual to the maximum combined resolution of your 2 monitors. For me, 2560x1024 works fine since my laptop panel is 1280x800 and my external LCD is 1280x1024.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I use it for xrandr, never tried to use amdcccle for this kind of stuff. But I think amdcccle could simply try to do this when it modifies xorg.conf and tries to restart X server. I really don't know if xorg-server can dynamically modify the size of the framebuffer without restart...
