[SOLVED]Hal Not Mounting USB Giving me a weird Error Message

Hey guys,

Hello! I've been trying to mount my usb devices but I keep getting this error:

Failed to mount "(name of usb device)"

Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.28" (uid=1000 pid=7116 comm="exo-mount) interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" member="Mount" error name="(unset)" requested_reply=0 destination="org.freedesktop.Hal" (uid=0 pid=1744 comm="/usr/sbin/hald)).

I've looked on google, and I did a little searching on the arch forums but can't find a solution yet. Any possible solution would be great. Thank you! I am using Openbox by the way with the thunar file manager. Could it be that I have not installed a certain dependence for reading usb files with the xfce file manager?

Is your user a member of the group 'hal' ?

I just added myself to the the group 'hal'. It did not work, but do I have to reboot before I know because I did not?

Does it work with root? Also, do you launch with ck-launch-session?

I don't know what you mean. What is a ck-launch-session? How do I make it work with root?

Re: [SOLVED]Hal Not Mounting USB Giving me a weird Error Message

I had to add myself to 'storage' 'optical' and 'hal' and then it started working. I don't know if it's the same for you.

Re: [SOLVED]Hal Not Mounting USB Giving me a weird Error Message

I checked my hal.conf and found out that these two (root and hal) are the only ones on the security allowance. Should I add myself to this?

Yes, please do tell. I have the same problem. I thought it was related to a hal upgrade a week or so ago, but I downgraded to the prior version and I still have the problem.

Re: [SOLVED]Hal Not Mounting USB Giving me a weird Error Message

Here's what I did to fix this. It's in the hal wiki.

Alternative Fixes to Automount Problems
This subsection was sourced from this forum page and corresponds to the error message displayed starting with "Rejected Message Send ...". Users have seen this message while using Thunar, PCManFM, and Konqueror.
A default /etc/dbus-1/system.d/hal.conf file allows device manipulation to all users, only from the console. Edit the hal.conf file by finding this section:
File: /etc/dbus-1/system.d/hal.conf
<!-- Only allow users at the local console to manipulate devices...>
   <policy at_console="true">
And change the value from true to false. Then restart dbus first, then restart hal (or you can just reboot your machine).
# /etc/rc.d/dbus restart
# /etc/rc.d/hal restart

When I installed arch a few weeks ago, I made this change to /etc/dbus-1/system.d/hal.conf to get automounting to work. Then about a week ago there was a hal update. It turns out the hal update rewrites the /etc/dbus-1/system.d/hal.conf file so that "policy at_console" is changed back to true. When I edited the file back to say <policy at_console="false"> automounting works again.
