Browse windows networks with Thunar

Hi,

I am running xfce on arch linux, everything up to date I believe. I would like to be able to browse windows networks with the file manager (Thunar). I do not need to share files or even access password protected content. I am simply looking to be able to browse public folders. (Without having to mount anything manually)

I found some instructions for installing samba and fusesmb, but then found a note saying fusesmb doesn't work anymore. A search on that showed that most people seem to be using gigolo now, but there is no wiki page for it, and being a noob I am hesitant to try to mess with it on my own.

If someone could give me very precise instructions on how to do this (samba/gigolo or otherwise, I don't care about the method as long as it's not terribly difficult) I would be very grateful. Thanks!

Re: Browse windows networks with Thunar

The instructions on gigolo's homepage seem pretty thorough http://www.uvena.de/gigolo/

Re: Browse windows networks with Thunar

Thanks. I'm not sure exactly how it works with samba though. Can I essentially replace "fusesmb" with "gigolo" in the guide once I've got it installed?

Re: Browse windows networks with Thunar

Ok, I installed samba and smbnetfs and everything looks good, the workgroup shows up in the file manager now. However...

None of the windows computers show up.

I installed exactly as the wiki said, using gamin and smbnetfs but not SWAT. I changed the workgroup to the correct name. Some other setting I might have missed that it needs?

Re: Browse windows networks with Thunar

I went back and installed SWAT because the wiki said it had some diagnostic tools.

The first thing I noticed is that "winbindd" is not running. Is this why I cannot see windows computers in the file manager? If so, how would I get it running?

Re: Browse windows networks with Thunar

you don't need samba or swat you just need smbclient and smbnetfs
try looking in /usr/share/doc/smbnetfs-0.5.2/ on how to configure it

Re: Browse windows networks with Thunar

Well a few restarts later and it seems to be working without any more changes... There's a windows 7 computer that doesn't seem to connect properly but I read that you have to change a registry value or something for that, and I don't really need to connect to that computer.
