Replacement for groff + man-db

Did anyone use http://heirloom.sourceforge.net/doctools.html or sth other (and lighter) than the stock groff?
As for mdocml feature request I'd suggest a "won't implement": it *is* fast and tiny but many man pages are almost unreadable.
