I've noticed the same problem. Pacman grinds system (firefox) to a halt too.
iirc, I dont think rar'ing was always this slow. Guess it might have something to do with sata, ncq and schedulers.

Hym, I just unpacked a 715MB rar archive and it took 40s.

Re: extracting .rar files is slow, too slow

$ls -la file.rar
-rwxr-xr-x 1 filip filip 547M 2008-02-21 15:33 file.rar

time unrar x file.rar
(...)
real    0m26.772s
user    0m17.039s
sys    0m3.423s

Maybe it's a filesystem issue?  I use reiserfs.

Re: extracting .rar files is slow, too slow

Well try this:

unrar a file normally with unrar x file.rar
then unrar a file in konqueror (marking, alt+u) with settings set to "dont test archives"

I promise you one thing: you will never say unrar x is slow... tongue

Cant say that i understand it tho, as krusader uses unrar to unpack files...

Re: extracting .rar files is slow, too slow

As a matter of interest run top alongside, and see if a lot of cpu time is allocated to wa, If so it's most likely some sort of disk bottleneck issue.  I have had something similar before moving big files around.

there is... in the archives options (settings -> configure krusader -> archives)

its unimportant anyway, because krusader STILL is so slow, you can actually count the MB's easily when hitting refresh...
