Does anyone else have this problem?
I successfully made steam run again by reverting to the older nvidia drivers, 195.36 (nvidia, nvidia-utils, and lib32-nvidia-utils). I don't know why this would break steam in wine, but I've reproduced the results several times.. can anyone else with steam verify that I'm not insane (so perhaps it can be posted to the arch wiki)? I'm on 64 bit, should it make a difference. Before this, steam would not get past the "updating" screen, even after removing the ClientRegistry.blob. It would just re-update and then again fail to load the UI further.
My laptop and desktop have identical configurations except 32 vs 64 bit and the desktop uses nvidia (GTS 250), so there wasn't much to revert & test when I found that the similarly up to date laptop still had steam working.

I think this might be relevant.

Oho. It is indeed. Didn't even look in that subforum x_x. Many thanks, I'll try that out next time I'm in Arch and mark this solved if so.
Edit: Yes, that was the issue and one of the updates to the nvidia packages fixed it. It also fixed an identical problem in my alternate kernel (kernel26-zen) so I don't need to redo the nvidia driver package for it (nvidia-zen). Many thanks.
