the intel 830 chipset only runs with the vesa driver, very slow performance. glxgear show 60fps instead 180fps with the old xorg and the intel 2.9 driver
I disabled KMS (i915.modeset=0 in menu.lst) and have it working with xorg-server 1.7.6-3 and xf86-video-intel 2.9.1-1. I haven't tried to upgrade yet.

I have updated to latest versions of intel drivers, kernel and xorg as of 26th June, and everything works perfectly

I see posts about it from about a year ago - is there still no better solution around than to disable modeset and downgrade Xorg and Intel drviers? Any news, anyone??
I bought a Lenovo IdeaPad 160U and got the extra feature described in this thread. Driving me crazy.

I'm using xorg-server 1.6 (with an even older card) and I'm quite happy with it - very fast and rock-stable. I think it does use more RAM, but it never hung or crashed, so I'm sticking to it.
It's not a perfect solution, but it's doable.
