Laptop shuts down at random times

since 2 days I have a problem with my laptop shutting down at seemingly random times. With shutting down I mean, complete reset, like when the battery would be drained or the power button is held for some seconds. I have no idea what's the cause of this. I've never had this before.

My first thought was a drained battery, but my battery is fully charged, so maybe it is overheating?

Now, I would like to know how to check what is wrong.  Also this is only happening since I switched to kernel 2.6.34 and switched from the nvidia binary drivers to the nouveau drivers, so maybe this can be an issue too?

So my questions:
how do I check what caused the reset (temperature, or something else) and can it be that for example switching from nvidia to nouveau drivers causes this?

(I hope this is the correct place to ask, I didn't know for sure if this message should be posted in hardware or here)

Re: Laptop shuts down at random times

if you suspect the video driver being the issue, just revert back and see if the problem persists. monitor your temps (check the wiki for sensors, and use something like gkrellm). you could also downgrade the kernel to check for that.

but as caveman said, check your logfiles for a trace first.

Re: Laptop shuts down at random times

It can be temperature but can be some other bug.

> since 2 days
What did you do then? I told you *not* to push the Big Red Button!
Check for any config changes, updates / downgrades etc.

I don't see anything wrong with it, any other logs I should check?

I'll try to monitor the temperature, I have to say that I had no resets today yet.

Re: Laptop shuts down at random times

Just to be sure, please post the output of 'grep -E '^\((W|E)' /var/log/Xorg.0.log'. If there are no errors in any of your logs - that's weird. It may be a hardware failure, you know.

The output of that was empty, so here is the full Xorg.0.log: http://pastebin.com/eJ3Shxyx

karol, which log file are you looking at? tmske is using nvidia drivers. But I see this:

Re: Laptop shuts down at random times

lol - at least you discovered some errors to fiddle with if you get bored wink

tmske, I would just revert back to nvidia for now to check if it is driver related, maybe play around with acceleration options (libexa is mentioned in the trace), or hopefully someone else will have some better ideas. If the problem persists, open a bug against xorg.

Ok, I'll switch back to nvidia drivers, too bad xrandr doesn't work with them (for dual screen)

What doesn't work, tmske? AFAIK there's nothing you can do with xrandr that can't be done by nvidia's own binaries.

Re: Laptop shuts down at random times

I'm almost sure that is a overheating problem. nouveau doesn't throttle down your gpu so it will always run at full speed, causing more heat, and that extra heat is causing your laptop to shutdown, else it would melt itself.
Check the fan's, the dust and the thermal compound of your laptop. Something is wrong because shutdown only happens in critical situations (+105ºC)

also install sensors and post the output.

I'll install the sensors and see if that's the problem.

With nouveau I can do something like this in a startup script:

xrandr --output LVDS-1 --mode 1680x1050 --output VGA-1 --mode 1920x1080 --right-of LVDS-1

This is not possible AFAIK on the command line with nvidia-drivers, it is possible using the program nvidia-settings, but I would love to be able to detect this at startup.  I know some of these things are possible to set in xorg.conf, but I've never got it working reliable. If you do know what to use for this, I'd love to know.
