[SOLVED] Part III: Install X and configure ALSA

Hi my names abraham and well I was following the tutorial for complete installation of Archlinux here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beg … ith_pacman and well I got stuck on the Step 2: Install X I was able to install the base Xorg packages but when I go to install the mesa package I get these errors:

Now I tried to install the mesa package but then I got a dependency issue. Now how am I suppose to be able to install all the packages needed for the desktop manager if I get these errors? I have this all running on a virtual machine using Virtual Box. This is a test setup for the real thing. I have some background on Ubuntu and well all my knowledge comes from there. I have been successful in doing everything else in the tutorial prior to part III step b. Now if I could get some help on this I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

Have you run pacman -Syu in the first place?
Always upgrade your system first, then install additional packages.

Which is perfectly OK. There had been quite a few upgrades since last install CD was released.
After it's finished you can go back to installing alsa (and everyzjing else).

P.S. Don't worry about those replacement packages, it's also supposed to be that way.

P.P.S Klibc is kernel-libc.

Ohh ok, so then the image I downloaded was out of date then, that's why I had to do a sync and upgrade? Also is the pacman -Syu equivalent to Ubuntu's sudo apt-get update command?

Yes, you might say that install CD is "out of date", because of available upgrades. But that's about the same as with every other distro.

Ohhh I have another question now I have the Intel® G45 Express Chipset and I was wondering if xf86-video-intel — Newer Version of Intel i810/i830/i9xx video drivers was the apropiate driver for it?

It's Intel® GMA X4500HD graphics, so I don't see why not. On the other hand, well, you don't have any other choice.

Hmm today's not my day...

Now I try to do the depmod -a to update kernel module dependencies and it is looking for an older version 2.6.30-ARCH and the one it has installed is 2.6.33-ARCH.... I tryed pacman -Syu and pacman -Sy nothing happened... what can I do to fix this?

There was a kernel update in the updates you did. Whenever that happens you should reboot the computer for those changes to take effect

Damn that slipped... there should have been a message to reboot the system after an upgrade I would think.

Excuse me for not being a know it all Mr. Mod. It was only a comment and everyone else on this forum has replied nicely to me I don't need an @ss to come and tell me that your a newb. If your going to be this stuck up in then go get yourself a new job because with your people skills you wont get anywhere. Ban me do what ever it is you want, I'm just trying this distro out and got all the info I needed! By the way thanks to everyone else who helped !

I replied to your suggestion that there should be a message advising a reboot after a kernel upgrade. The typical Arch user does not need such a message because they are aware of what's happening on their system, hence my comment.

Also, it should be obvious why I moved your thread to Newbie Corner - not to tell you "that your a newb", but because the topics you have raised are related to your inexperience with Arch, and do not have anything to do with Desktop Environments, your original choice of sub-forum.

I gather from all this that you think I've been impolite - well, OK then. I'll avoid answering your questions in future.

You're not going to get another warning, I assure you.

Your first problem was the direct result of not following directions. You should have run pacman -Syu, as the guide instructs you to.
Your second problem was also the direct result of not following directions. You should have rebooted when a kernel upgrade occurred, as the guide states.
Further, you reacted with surprise when partially realizing that Arch is a rolling release. Therefore, it is fair to conclude that you are new to Arch and hence your thread has (appropriately) been moved here.
If you want to thank everyone who helped out, then you should also be thanking tomk. Without him, and others who have volunteered years of their time, there would be no distribution for you to try in the first place.

Lastly, please do not admonish members of the moderation team. Have a look at the forum rules in my sig.
