Hi Guys,
I have a Creative X-fi USB device that I would like to get going.
It seems to me installed ok, dmesg shows:
usb 7-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
usb 7-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
input: Creative Technology Ltd Creative Xmod as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.1/usb7/7-1/7-1:1.3/input/input15
generic-usb 0003:041E:30D0.0002: input,hidraw1: USB HID v1.11 Device [Creative Technology Ltd Creative Xmod] on usb-0000:00:1d.1-1/input3
usbcore: registered new interface driver snd-usb-audio
My laptop also has an intel based card.
Both devices show up in kmix and I have un-muted the mixer for the creative device.
I have tried using VLC to play a song through the device, but all it sees is a "default" device and won't let me set a different ALSA device.
Can anyone tell me how I can tell what device it should show up as?
By the way, all lights on the device can be controlled by kmix i.e mute and X-fi CMSS-3D, however the large volume know changes the volume of my intel card ...
Edit: An update, xmms shows the device as ALSA hw:2,0 or OSS /dev/dsp2, however when it tries to open the device there is an error.
Maybe a permission thing?
Thanks,

I had a similar issue with two sound devices, where ALSA sometimes switched the default from one to another for no reason. I solved it with this:
/etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf: options snd-ctxfi index=0
Don't panic!

I don't have that module, only snd_usb_audio ... does the same apply ..

I have the x-fi notebook one (pci express) and sure enough it's loaded alright (dmesg output) but alas it's NOT showing up on alsamixer.
usb 8-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
usb 8-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
input: Creative Technology Ltd SB X-Fi Notebook as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.2/usb8/8-2/8-2:1.3/input/input11
generic-usb 0003:041E:30D2.0004: input,hidraw3: USB HID v1.11 Device [Creative Technology Ltd SB X-Fi Notebook] on usb-0000:00:1d.2-2/input3
input: Creative Technology Ltd SB X-Fi Notebook as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.2/usb8/8-2/8-2:1.4/input/input12
I've tried blacklisting my onboard realtek one !snd_hda_intel, running alsamixer gives me "no soundcards found".
Using:
cat /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
options snd_hda_intel=0
options snd_ctxfi index=1
Doesn't work for me

Do you have the regular x-fi usb device, or the surround sound one?
I got the surround sound thinggy and for me it is the other way round. I have sound, but no mixer.
I have the USB X-fi xmod device, it has outputs for optical 5.1 and headphone, it is the device with the large volume control in the middle of it.
Cheers,
