[solved] Screen Blank after Syu no X installed

So I just did a fresh install. Did base and base-devel plus a few packages like openssh and sudo

First thing I do after install is pacman -Syu. As soon as that is done I reboot

it loads about 4 services and then the screen goes blank as in the monitor losing losing signal with the video card. I reformatted and did again using a different mirror thinking either my download was corrupt or the mirror was corrupt but I go the same result.

I was able to install this no problem on my laptop last night using the same CD.

Anyone see this issue before? Or know how i can get into my system to see error logs and what not?

Thanks

Re: [solved] Screen Blank after Syu no X installed

a little more info.

A week or so ago i installed arch 64bit with no problems. im trying to install 32bit to see if i get any better compatability with games in wine..

I've got a dual core amd ( not sure of exact model at the moment )
2 GB Ram
nvidia GeForce 9600GT for video

my best guess is that it is failing on

waiting for udev events to be processed

Re: [solved] Screen Blank after Syu no X installed

I booted off the CD and mounted my ext4 partition on my hard drive and looked through the log files.

The last line in the kernel.log file shows

June 28 20:36:32 desktop kernel: forcedeth 0000:00:08.0: irq 25 for MSI/MSI-X

I googled MSI/MSI-X and it let me to PCI Express

I decided to reinstall again and this time run pacman -S nvidia before I do a full system upgrade

After initial install I decided to look at kernel.log before I do the upgrades. That same line was there. So I was afraid it may not work but I tried it anyway.

So far so good. I installed the nvidia drivers which in turn required a kernel upgrade at the same time. Once that was done I rebooted and then ran pacman -Syu.

It's still booting for now, so I guess if anyone else out there has a problem with the Nvidia 9600GT try installing the latest drivers before you do a system upgrade if you don't already have them installed.

It might be related to KMS. When upgrading the system without installing the latest graphics driver leads to a black screen, it might be that kernel mode setting is not supported. You can disable it by adding a kernel option to the kernel line in GRUB.
