Partially working sound card

I have a nVidia Corporation MCP51 High Definition Audio (rev a2), not sure what the actual chip set is, and I'm having some interesting audio problems at the moment.

I have my computer connected to my receiver via an optical cable. Up until Friday, I was able to play all of my audio through this connection (MPD, VLC, Flash). On Saturday, I was unable to play any thing from MPD, Flash, or VLC.

The thing that makes this interesting, is that in VLC, if I select S/PDIF as the audio device, then magically there is sound.

I have not found any errors in any logs, and lsof shows that MPD has the sound card open, but there is no sound.

I was wondering if any one has any ideas on how to fix this, or if there is any one out there that is having similar problems.

Thanks!
