I understand that gnome no longer requires hal, but I get this warning in .xsession-errors. dbus is running·
** (gnome-power-manager:4914): WARNING **: Either HAL or DBUS are not working!
Is this anything to be concerned about? Everything seems to be working.

gnome-power-manager still uses hal for some operations like using special keys like brightness or to show tooltip for that action.
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.
