Extremely slow performance

I just installed arch several hours ago, and I loved it.  So I install XFCE4 and everything is going very smoothly, until I notice a EXTREMELY DRASTIC system slowdown.  Literally, when I'm typing this, I have to wait about 3 seconds for every letter I hit to show up on the screen.  I open gnome-system-monitor and find that the system is at nearly 100% CPU for both of my cores all the time.  What's going on?  The system is barely usable right now.  In addition, startup time has hugely slowed down, to the extent that it takes twice as long as it takes to boot Ubuntu 10.04.

I'm running 64bit arch, T5250 mobile dual core, 4GB 800mHz RAM, 150GB hard drive.  What's going on?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Re: Extremely slow performance

gnome-system-monitor should show you what process is causing the problem.
What browser are you using? I've had problems with chromium making X go to 100% lately. I'm sticking to midori in the mean time.

Re: Extremely slow performance

I was using chromium, now I"m using midori, but i'm still noticing overall system sluggishness....Gnome system monitor is telling me that it's the gnome-system-monitor process, but after I close that, I still feel that the system is a lot slower to respond than any of the other distros I've used before....any ideas why?

Re: Extremely slow performance

In the past, I've had similar problems with high CPU usage when I used the internet.  The problem only occurred periodically, but always started when I used the internet (I used Firefox).  Using "top", either X or events/0 would take up most of my CPU.  Restarting the computer would temporarily solve the problem.  Eventually, I downgraded my wireless card driver (an idea that I got from http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=88781), and the problem went away.  I'm now upgraded to the newest driver (after skipping several releases), and I haven't had the problem anymore.
