I've just gone through rebuilding my system one package at a time with makepkg . Reading the man page to make sure I understood its operation before starting in, I decided to run it in all cases with options -bci. The man page speaks of -i as an "install/upgrade" process which follows a successful build. Am I correct in assuming that by "install/upgrade" the activity described here is identical to that performed by the --upgrade option in pacman, that is to say -i first removes the existing package and then installs the freshly built one in its place? Am I on target here?

i believe so. i think i have used the 'i' option in the very distant past and that is what happened. is this not what has happened?

If in doubt, check the makepkg script. It's just a bash script after all.
