Hi; I am thinking of purchasing this 3G USB modem, http://www.thriftycomputer.com/option-w … modem.html
Does anyone know if there is a way to use that on Linux? I currently use WICD to connect to ethernet and wifi.

I use this with my nokia phone to connect to the internet, can't see why a 3G USB modem should be any different. Note this is a cli solution though

Cool; thanks! CLI is fine.
Surely I'll need a driver for that device though... won't I? Or am I good to go because it is a USB device?

I *think* if you use NetworkManager instead of Wicd, it can handle 3G connection.

Really? Might just switch to NetworkManager then. What about drivers... do I need to modprobe a driver to use the USB 3G modem?
Also, can I just use this? (I already have pppd on my laptop)
/usr/sbin/pppd idle 7200 asyncmap 0 updetach 460800 lock crtscts modem /dev/ttyUSB0

Does anyone know if I will need a driver, or if it will work automatically like a USB flash drive?

No driver needed, if your are on a standard kernel
