So much for the nvidia fanboys who always say that amd is slow to support new kernel and xorg.

Nice flame dude. A Nvidia user talking of Nvidia fanboys. It's kinda funny.

Actually I am not but the PC that my father uses has a fx 5200 because it was around. I personally am happy with my raden hd 4670.
In ATI threads there are always some nvidia trolls. I didn't flame, I just expressed my disappointment in nvidia as they do not support newer kernels like nvidia fanboys say but drop support for older cards like the nvidia fanboys say they don't.
First 71.xx with xorg 1.5: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=122436
Now there's only a driver for Fx 5500 + available.

So for many older cards there's no alternative to nouveau which just doesn't work good yet in contrast to the open source radeon drivers that even run half life 2 (slow, but they do).

older cards that get quickly marked as "legacy"

My laptop, that I recently retired because of the bad state it's in, is 6 years old and the Geforce 6600 in it is not yet considered legacy. 6 years! And quite some generations of cards released since then. That's quite a commitment I'd say.

@cdh: Just the mere use of the word "fanboys" is flame material. Also, things change, the legacy drivers aren't updated as fast as they used to be. But that does not make everything nvidia supporters have said in the past invalid. It also does not make them fanboys when they were stating something that was true.

Re: Nvidia vs. Nouveau

Interestingly, for me on my old (now overheated) FX go5200 2d in Nouveau was MUCH, MUCH faster than the blob's. That was running on legacy 173xx drivers and kde4 though.
