I want to prevent pm-utils from loading. Is it possible? I know i can disable pm-utils by pm-powersave false.

You can suspend certain modules, or disable hooks:

I know that. My question was is disabling pm-utils at startup possible, whole daemon, module or whatever it really is.

pm-utils doesn't run in the background, it's explicitly called.  There is no daemon, module, etc.  It's a binary program that is run on its own or by other utilities (such as gnome power management).  If you wish to truly disable it, simply uninstall it.

Hal depends on it so I think I will switch permanently to pm-utils, write own hooks and uninstall laptop-mode-tools. Thanks for answer

You may want to do a bit more research...pm-utils simply provides an advanced means of hibernation/suspension.  laptop-mode-tools does much more. They work well in tandem.

You are wrong, pm-utils today is much more that a way to suspend/hibernate.
Pm-utils in his new version have build in Power managment hooks, that can confict with hooks provided by the laptop-mode-tools.

Really?  Someone should probably let the pm-utils developers know that then because they still think it's used for sane hibernation/suspension only:

Re: [SOLVED] How to disable pm-utils on startup?

Actually, someone should probably update their wiki... Not sure if it is "much more that a way to suspend/hibernate", but they indeed started to integrate powersaving features.

Fix some thinkos introduced by the wireless hooks changes.

Among other things, we were not actually enabling power management
for wireless adaptors.  We are now.

Add a hook to disable polling optical media while on battery.

Update git tree packaging to conflict with laptop-mode-tools

The new powermanagement scripts conflict with laptop-mode-tools.
Make sure both are not installed at the same time.

Re: [SOLVED] How to disable pm-utils on startup?

I slightly changed few laptop-mode-tools hooks, copied them to pm-utils power.d folder and they work just fine. To sum up, pm-utils can be full replacement for laptop-mode-tools, however it still lacks clear and easy configuration (editing every hook manually vs laptop-mode.conf).  On the other hand readjusting/writing new hooks is just a matter of few minutes and probably everybody will be doing it only once.

Now I have complete and powerful power managment solution: pm-utils+poverdevil big_smile

Re: [SOLVED] How to disable pm-utils on startup?

I'm a bit confused about this thing, but yes, it seems that pm-utils is going to become a complete power management solution on its own.
I'm not sure that, atm, pm-utils can provide all the features of laptop-mode-tools and I'm probably going to stick to laptop-mode-tools for power management and just use pm-utils for suspend / hibernate (no problems here after update).

I'm just a bit concerned about possible conflicts between the two.

@thayer:

You previously did a fantastic job on the wiki regarding power management. It would be great to update it to reflect the new changes in pm-utils and to provide users with the current power management alternatives along with possible conflicts between them.

Maybe we should start a new thread to discuss the current pm-utils / laptop-mode-tools situation and plan changes in the wiki. I would like to contribute, even if I must admit I don't have much free time now, as I'm taking the last exams and writing my master's degree thesis, but still.
