My DVD drive appears to have stopped working for some reason. When I try to put in a CD it just whirs for a minute or two and no disc is detected on the computer. This is the case for various discs I have tried and in Windows XP as well as Arch Linux. External DVD drive works fine but I would really like to fix the problem with the internal drive. I have an Acer Aspire 5500z.

since the result is same in both OS, it seems to be the hardware problem and time to find a replacement imo.

It does sound like a hardware problem. Can you read DVDs ?? They use a different LASER. Sometimes they use the same optics. If a DVD works and CDs don't, it is time for a new drive.
