i8kfan Not Working

I tried using i8kfan to control my fan, as my laptop heats up while playing dota on arch.

[theta@boolean-pc ~]$ sudo i8kfan
Password:
can't open /proc/i8k: No such file or directory
[theta@boolean-pc ~]$

This is the error that I get.

PS: I already posted a similar query on Laptop Issues but couldn't get a reply.

Re: i8kfan Not Working

[theta@boolean-pc ~]$ sudo modprobe i8k
Password:
FATAL: Error inserting i8k (/lib/modules/2.6.33-ARCH/kernel/drivers/char/i8k.ko): No such device
[theta@boolean-pc ~]$

Here's the error that I get although the same utility does work on windows xp.

Re: i8kfan Not Working

Sorry to sound arrogant, but please try using a more Newbie-friendly distribution first.
If you are not able to follow the wiki http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fan_Speed_Control and are even unable to find out what module you need "...it requires some kernel modules which I am not aware of. Someone please identify these.", you'll have no fun with Arch.

You say you have a Dell...
Nice going .) But the setback is that Dell relables chips and that even the same models have different chips.

Last but not least...
"...the same utility does work on windows xp."
A kernel-MODULE is no utility and not some tool that can be used in Windows.

Sorry, but you are!

He is talking about I8kfan and it has nothing to do with your reference to Fan Speed Control and the presumption of not searching the Wiki pages.

There is a pending problem with I8kutils since recent Kernel updates. Modprobe does not work and even by forcing it, it starts showing strange temperatures. It is some time now I'm searching for a fix too.

Here is a reference to the problem. http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=96356
