i686 or x86_64

hi guys, am gentoo use, and trying archlinux.
in gentoo i use march=native, and compile stuff, i need not worry about the architecture.

am using centrino core 2 duo, with 4gb ram.
what would u recommend me to install, an i686 or x86_64 version.

i guess intel core 2 duo comes under i686 family and its a 32 bit processor, but can execute 64bit words.....

what do u think?

thanks in advance smile

well for now there's no flash on the 64 bit side, but if that doesn't bother you... go ahead with x86_64..

my 2 cents

Could still use bin32 browser with 32bit flash in x86_64, if you dont mind a multilib system until the new 64bit flash is released. Ive used both on this machine but am using x86_64 now. I only really notice a performance difference when using cpu intensive stuff like video encoding, in which case 64 is noticably quicker and more responsive during the process.

If you plan on adding more memory, you will need to use the x86_64 version, as x86 can only support up to 4GB. I have had great experiences with flash on x86_64, so don't let that scare you away.

Oh, and this probably doesn't belong in Desktop Environments tongue

Actually, kernel can be recompiled with BIGMEM (PAE), so i686 can see and use up to 64GB RAM. But system cannot allocate more than 3.2GB for one process...

64bit will be useful if you render something (blender, ardour, etc.) or doing smth with math calculations. For everyday use i686 more than enough.

My friend with 64bit Gentoo still unhappy - my system working approx 10% faster big_smile Funny, eh?
