USB full install

Hey Just A wonderin' here,
Has anyone successfully installed Arch fully onto a usb thumb-drive or usb hdd?
I tried like three times and made sure to install grub to the correct device but it
always says that grub cannot find device "sdx" (replace x with the device arch
was installed onto) The reason I do this is for my devices that are still under a
factory warranty. (I could care less but it was a gift and has a 4-year warranty)
And installing a non-microsoft OS voids it. ( Old Bill's Got Me Cornered.) To
be fair my laptop (Toshiba Satellite L3500) Has been a pain with almost all
Linux distros. It won't boot up anything based on the Live-scripts yet it easily
can boot up Ubuntu (Sadly.....). I really want Arch on the thumb-drive. It's got
plenty of space for Arch (8gb sandisk Cruzer) If Anyone Else has had success
PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO REPLY TO THIS POST!!! I don't wanna be stuk
With Only Ubuntu. (Which Somehow works flawlessly unlike anything else IDK?)

                                                                             Thanx for Reading.....

Re: USB full install

Perhaps ArchBang will satisfy your wants or LARCH, both running option-based packages.

Also CTKarchlinux which is french archlinux but has options for english.  It has i686 or X86_64, pacmanfm, openbox, arora, midori gparted, persistent addons, cp2ram, and 560MB of packages.

When in cp2ram it is very fast.

All versions of archlinux are held captive by their kernel installed...this cannot be easily changed.  CTK is kerenl32 at present.

Easy download and dd to load into flash.

You may learn about Live flash by trying it out.  No need to select packages and configure and grub.

CTK runs very well in cp2ram.  (min ram 600MB.

This is really fun,
There should be a thread like this,
You should make one now.

Re: USB full install

Then it is agreed,
Haiku shall be its own thread.
Time, it is wasted...

Re: USB full install

back to the subject,
of which I had began with.
my needs are not met

with a live distribution.
they, like an abyss,
are not to be filled swift.

the information
lilsirecho presented,
was good in effort,

but did not show how to make,
a full, boot-able,
install of arch via core,

(installation disk),
onto a U-S-B drive.
thumb, flash, or hard disk

not a live session,
but a full install guide.
thank you for your time.

Re: USB full install

Install of arch core.iso to CF card was done successfully in this system.

The .iso was downloaded into my HDD , DD applied to install into 8GB usb flash drive.

This flash drive became the install medium for arch.

I understand that the same flash drive can be partitioned to enable the install of arch on the same flash device.  This would give the user a partition for arch and a partition for the install program to use in the event of system crashes.

Try searching for ....arch install to CF card..... for the procedure since I don't recall the exact post.

I must say I tried it but didn't get it to perform but that happens for first timers all the time!

I assume that any flash drive of sufficient size would permit the technique to work, (haiku or no).

I still have the flash device and just might give the technique another shot.

If I find the reference I can post it later.

Re: USB full install

Retried the install and was able to complete all steps to the second primary.

However, I did not put grub in the mbr but into the second primary.

This produced a reboot into the install procedure instead of the OS.

I may try again using the mbr for grub.

Re: USB full install

Reinstalled using the 8GB flash CF card with the .iso installed in the first primary partition.

Successfully installed archlinux into the second partition with grub in mbr, rebooted and installed pacman. xorg., and kde.

At present there is 3.8GB of free space on the partition.  There is no swap, only root and udev(tmpfs)

This illustrates that the procedure is valid.

I am posting from the new 8GB CF archlinux install.

Hope this is of some help for you.(Haiku or no).

I find it works well and plan to test this install for a time.
